View Full Version : New to propranolol. Few questions.
Hello guys.
I'm 17 years old and I was prescribed propranolol for Anxiety.
I have a few questions. I often suffer from shortness of breathe and I assume its from the anxiety, will I still be ok to take propranolo?
I read the leaflet and saw the side affect section, just reading the leaflet bought on a small panic attack. It said you can have wheezyness and shortness of breathe which some times can be fatal. It also said you can have heart problems.
I really want to get better now, I am sick of worrying about every little thing.
Any advice/information is appreciated. Thanks.
EDIT - I also suffer from hayfeaver according to my doctor because he prescribed me some pills for them about 3 months back.
Hi
I take those tabs and have done for the best part of 10 years. I was worried like you but they have helped in some way.
Thay can make you a little breathless, and reference the heart it slows it down a little hence helping the anxiety and or palpatations.
I would try not to worry about taking them, you doc has a history in front of him of your health problems and your meds so if he had any doubts he wouldn't have prescribed them.
It'a easy to say don't worry, my mind is in torment with worry, but just think that dr gave you them and he knows what he's doing.
Not much help, but hope i have eased your mind a little.
Hope you feel a little better quickly :)
Thanks for the info. I have a terrible bodyclock at the moment so I need to get that in order before I take the meds. I want to keep them in a good routine because I read that that's the best way to take them.
You're welcome to the info, and i'm sure once you start taking the meds you will begin to feel the benefit.
:)
I can't help but worry about these side effects still... I haven't took any of the meds yet but I woke up at 3AM and I was aware of my own heart beat, it felt like it was beating really hard and fast, I just hope this is actually an anxiety problem and not a heart one.
A fast beating heart is one of the symptoms of anxiety, I thought mine was going to burst the very first one I had it was going extremely fast :lac: Now i've been on Propranalol since April.

Have you noticed a difference yet?
Definately, I was on 40mg taken twice a day and then my doctor changed it to 80mg once a day which i'm on now. It's calmed me down a lot and made things more manageable. The first week or so they were still getting into my system so I was still on edge and anxious but by the second week I felt better.

I'm still unsure if to start taking them with having this weird fast heartbeat thing. Some times I wont be worried at all and my heart will be beating hard. I hate going to bed because when I lie down I know I wont be able to get asleep because of the heart beat. :weep:
Have you asked your doctor about this at all? It might reassure you if you do ask him.

I did tell my doctor that when I went to sleep my heart would race but he must have just classed it as anxiety.

Hi :)
Before I went on my tablets my Dr gave me a test for asthma as I was convinced I had it.
Even walking home from the test I thought I was having an asthma attack.
The test showed I didn't have it but I was still very concerned about having the tablets and I spent over a fortnight feeling breathless on them to be honest. My poor family had to put up with me wheezing and being 'breathless' through last Summer
I have been on them a year now and they have stopped my palpitations so for me they are worth going on them.
If you are still worried I would go back to your Dr and tell them your worries so they can do the appropriate tests like I had and then if appropriate you can go on the tablets with less worries.
i have been taking propananol for 10yrs and as soon as i come of them notice what they do i to am a hayfever sufferer i get it all year round but i would never be without them they work for me
I don't leave the house without my Propranolol!!!!!!
I agree with Tracy, if I don't take them for a day, I realise how much they are helping my life.
I have hayfever too - very weird.
Does anyone suffer with dizziness on these please? I've only been taking them for a week and the last few days I've been really quite bad but don't want to stop the meds as they're working so well with the anxiety!!
I have been on them a month now and feel a little tightness in my throat, mainly when lying down. Also some dizziness, mainly in the morning although that was primarily the first week and is pretty much gone now. I do get a big head rush getting up fast from a hot bath still. I thought I would stop taking them for a couple of days to see if my throat felt better. Well my fast heart rate came back and with that more panic followed by palpitations, and since my anxiety is related to my heart, I figured I can put up with some throat tightness! It isn't hard to breathe really, just feels annoying.

Thanks, I don't feel quite so dizzy today so perhaps its wearing off :yesyes:
Perhaps speak to your GP about your throat tightness when you next see him Casey?
Iam on 40 mg twice a day since june , Iam suffering from panic attacks and anxiety since 1999 .I found propranolol a magic meds. it calm me down , my heart was racing with a very strong beats , now I feel like Iam dreaming ,it done the trick. propranolol does not treat anxiety and panic attacks it treat the symptoms only such as fast heart beat , shaking ...etc
its side effects may occure in the first two weeks than will vanish.
good luck
I Got 80mg One A Day Slow Release Capsules For Anxiety Off My Gp. I Had Them In My Bag For A Week Coz Id Read The Side Effects, Just Getting Them Out And Looking At Them And Putting Them Back. However I Had A Bad Panic Attack 2 Days Ago Found The Nearest Chemist And Asked Questions If I Take Them Will I Be Ok. I Was So Reassured When Told Oh Yes Even Snooker Players Take Them To Relax Them Before A Game. I Bought A Bottle Of Water And Took One, I Was Scared But Didnt Want To Feel Like This No More. After An Hour Or So I Started To Feel A Lot Calmer Than Before. This Is My Second Day On Them But I Think They Take Longer To Kick In. I Do Find That Once You Build The Courage Up To Take Them You Do Start To Feel A Bit Better Than Before.
Ask your doc about maybe taking valium before you go to bed to relax you re the prop they do work but they take a wee while to settle in to your system the first time you take them
