High blood pressure
Evening everyone,
Im not going to panic over this one, i brought a blood pressure machine today, not sure if it was a wise thing to do.
Took my blood pressure and it was 168 over 97, pulse was 102.
My gp has never taken my blood pressure, it said in the booklet with the kit that it is high, should i be concerned.

Re: High blood pressure
Hi Jason
We have quite a few members posting concerns about this so please read their experiences and any advice we have given.
Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and you will see "Similar threads".
Have a read of those for reassurance and advice

Re: High blood pressure
Hi Jason
I want to buy one of these machines but my husband won't let me. He says that it would become an accessory, like a piece of jewelery, and i know he's right!!
I cant give you any advice other than to not use it, and it will make you more anxious. Get your GP to check your blood pressure, although admittedly when i get mine checked at the surgery it is always a bit high as i am anxious about being there. My friend checked it at work and it was normal.
Best wishes

Re: High blood pressure
If your pulse was 102, you were probably in a state. If you really want to know, get someone else to do it and not tell you the result until another day, that works for me.

Re: High blood pressure
Sit quietly for a few minutes before you take it

Re: High blood pressure
Check the cuff size chap.
My bp was always high, but I found out since that if the cuff size is too small for your arm, you will get high readings.
I ordered the larger cuff size, since then my BP reads 136/84 ave.

Re: High blood pressure
Also when testing your bp make sure you sit for 5 mins before testing then after the first test sit for another 5 mins then test again then take the 2 readings and average them out. The averaged out number will be the most accurate.

Re: High blood pressure
Hi Jason, just have a quick look on the health anxiety page as just recently a whole thread was dedicated to blood pressure and i put on the NHS guidelines for blood pressure readings that i use every day at the surgery. Hope this helps.xxxx

Re: High blood pressure
Hi Jason,
I thought about buying a machine however I know it would make me paranoid.
I am having mines monitored by the doctor, last week it was 155/99, Im not on medication however he does want to check it again in a few months.
Yep get the GP to check it for you.
