Anemia referred for colonoscopy
So I had a full blood test carried out the other day mainly because I thought my gums looked pale.....turns out I'm anemic and been put on iron tablets.
I had a colonoscopy nearly 3 years ago (my third one) originally one was because I had some rectal bleeding, they found some polyps one being the pre cancerous type, I had another a year later and and they found more polyps but all benign, my last one was 3 years this August and was clear. When my doctor rang she asked about my tummy etc which apart from a few ibs symptoms it's fine, i said I was due my colonoscopy in August next year, she asked about my periods which can be very heavy I lose a lot of clots etc. She said it's sensible to get my colonoscopy done now and will refer me plus to a gynecologist.
I'm literally on meltdown. I was always under the understanding colon cancer etc took along time to grow from polyps. Absolutely convinced now I've got cancer.
My dad died 3 years ago from bowel cancer but had never been screened.
Honestly don't know what to do with myself.
Re: Anemia referred for colonoscopy
That seems totally illogical to me. If you have heavy periods you will be losing more blood than normal so why has she even thought you need a colonoscopy?
Re: Anemia referred for colonoscopy
I think once they remove polyps people have to have a repeat colonoscopy every three years - my husband does after a screening FIT test showed blood and he had several removed.
Re: Anemia referred for colonoscopy
I spoke to her again, she said because I've had polpys that's why she is referring me for a colonoscopy
The thing that's worrying me is its "urgent" seen within 10 days, I know that super quick and a good thing but it's scarring me so much.
She said she doesn't think it has anything to do with my bowel and again if I hadn't had polpys removed she would have referred me straight to a gynecologist. Is said.to her I always thought that bowel/colon cancer started with a polpys and she agreed
I'm so scarred I can't stop crying. My poor little boy I can't leave him.

Re: Anemia referred for colonoscopy
Trouble is as soon as you put it in Google up pops colon cancer! I'm sure they told me that it comes from polpys and they take years to grown hence the screening!!!! I don't understand x
Re: Anemia referred for colonoscopy
Anything you put in google with result in cancer.
Yes they take years to grow so it is unlikely to be that causing the issues here.
If she thought there was blood in your poo then she should have tested for that first in my opinion.
