Trouble getting help

When I first went to my doctor's she immediately prescribed Prozac. I had an horrendous time on it. I asked her about counselling and she refused, saying that the waiting list was too long and that it didn't work anyway. Eventually, I saw another doctor who put me on the list, and I was on the course in about 6 weeks.

That was a long time ago and it didn't really work for me. I've been on a psychologists list for about a year and I've got an assesment coming up very shortly- which I'm pretty nervous about.

I've been severely depressed for a number of years and I have tried a lot of things to try and help myself. I keep flirting with exrecise, although I find it hard to commit, I've taken up yoga, I do a lot of reading, I'm volunteering.....

I feel though that I need to be in a programme. I need a coach or a therapist to say 'try this', 'how's that working for you', 'well done', 'you're making progress'.........

I'm trying to get better by myself and I'm trying to amass information and work things out for myself in a random and adhoc way. If getting better was like a college course, i could see where it was going. I know that it's not like that, but I need goals and I need to see progress. i feel like I'm going round and round at the moment.

I can't really afford a counsellor, but I feel that I would really benefit from checking in with someone. I've found a website called www.counsellorsonline.co.uk hopefully they'll be cheaper because they don't have the overheads and it might even be better for me, because i won't be building myself up about appointments and kicking myself about things that I wanted to say, but forgot about.

Anything is worth a try.

you sound as if you are willing, and from my own experience of the specialist psychologists I will say that you have to work hard at what they tell you, you may feel worse before feeling better, but they do (or at least mine does) seem to know what buttons to press.
they will help you set realistic goals, the progress will come eventually, think of attending each session as progress in itself even if the session is very hard work and you sometimes come out feeling worse for it. Its a long haul, while Im still low down compared with before the "incident" that set off my problems, I am no longer slipping back even further, but there are ups and downs.

Hi,

I had 6 couselling sessions earlier this year for panic.
They did me no good whatsover in fact i felt worse after them.
I too am waiting to see a psycholgist. Ive been waiting for 8 months.
I am now setting myself goals but like you would prefer to have a programme set for me.
I cant wait much longer as i feel like lifes passing me by so thats why now i have got to do something to help myself.
Nopanic do cbt over the phone and ive heard its very good.
Ive contacted them about this but am still waiting to hear from them.

i'm seeing a psychologist and it does help she's set me 2 goals which i am working on
fortunately a freind who helps run the support group with me (for sa) is a psychologist and he's worked with me for 2 years he encourages me and says well done when i achieve a goal so i am sure when you see a psychologist it will work for you
dont be nervous about the assessment they are quite good and helpful
