Will being sick stop Citalopram working?

Hi all,

Well iv been on citalopram for 5 weeks today and although I'm not all better and still suffering with anxiety, I do on a whole feel much better. I'm still only on 10mg which is why I think I still feel anxious as I'm waiting to increase my dose wen I'm off work on annual leave incase I get the side effects again!

My question to you all is what happens if ur sick? Iv not been sick whilst taking this but we've got a sickness bug going around work and I just thought if I get it an I'm sick for 24-48 hours then will the drug wear off an stop working, giving me the withdrawal symptoms on top of the stomach bug? I'd obv still take my tablet at the same time but if I'm being sick then surely itl just come back up which will mean me missing a dose?

Sorry for sounding dramatic lol just thought I'd ask if anyone knows!

Hi there, I wouldn't worry. First of all just because everyong else is getting the bug doesn't mean you will. Second, even If you are sick you are only going to loose what is in your stomach at the time. I am not sure how long it takes for the citalopram to get out of your stomach but once it is through your stomach it is safely in your body. Also the citalopram will have been building up in your body over the time you have been taking it. A couple of times I have managed to completely miss a dose and it hasn't had any impact on how I feel, presumably because of the build-up in my body. Hope this helps! J
