Citalopram and the elderly
At the moment I'm caring for my mum who is 78. For many years she was taking 30mg clomipramine. Over this year she has become more and more anxious, lost a lot of weight and started with panic attacks. GP increased original meds to 50mg which she was on for 4 weeks. During this time she became much worse to the extent that even going upstairs to the bathroom would bring on a panic attack.
Yesterday she saw a different GP who prescribed Citalopram 20mg and today she's taken her first tablet. She is very anxious and slightly confused (not helped by the fact that she has a Urinary Tract Infection and is on antibiotics). Its now 8 hours since she took the tablet and she's convinced she can see a doll in the pattern on her pillowcase and is very weepy.
Any suggestions on how I can help her through this would be very much appreciated.
