    Filling In The Dla Form

    HI
I was just reading deccas post about the DLA and felt I would give some advice and encouragement on this.

Most of us have come across the DLA form before and I would rather be dragged behind a run away horse across a field of broken glass than try to fill in one of these forms by myself. Yes filling in these forms is a painful process and you may be better picking up 10 of them because you would get so annoyed that you would rip the first 9 into tiny bits.

In relity most of the forms are for those with a physical issue and then they have a small bit for those with emotional issues, which goes to show what they think of emotional issues but I am not going to go on to that area or this will be more of a book than a post

1/Get expert advice when filling in the forms

2/Always keep a photocopy (not because you are telling lies but because we all forget due to medication stress etc)

The most important point to remember is that you put down your VERY WORST DAY when answering the questions

Example if your asked can you go out and you put down sometimes I can, then from that answer, they think that you can get about. You may have agoraphobia but, yes at times you can go out but mostly its with a trusted individual or a place you feel safe.

They ask how far can you walk...you may be able to walk 10 miles but thats on a good day but if your anxiety is too much it can be difficult to leave the house.

If I was asked the first two questions I would write

1/ No I cant go out because I feel (and then write down the worst day) dizzy frightened alone etc

2/ I cant walk far without feeling sick or dizzy and feel that I am about to fall over

This is not about cheating the DLA OR DHSS this is about getting that support to make life more comfortable for you and you family. We all know how expensive it is for a taxi and sometimes we just grab one to get us home quickly 10 mins later we are £8 down.

ALWAYS ALWAY ALWAYS WRITE DOWN YOUR WORST DAY WHEN FILLING IN THE FORMS!!!!! Each year there is millions of money unclaimed because people dont claim, people cant fill in the forms!!! But mostly because they make it so Dam difficult for us to fill in the forms.

One more point (bet you wish you had made a cup of tea before reading this post ) if you do get a knock back, dont give up most people on appeal do get the DLA.

    Take care

    xx

Re: Filling In The Dla Form

    Woah, thanks so much Purplehaze!

My hubby (who is medically retired) and I are appealing against the third decision to reject his claim. We have a tribunal hearing on the 14th December and I'm hoping that we may finally be given a voice and be heard.

We filled in the last form with help from a member of our local community support group - he specialises in helping people fill out these horrendous forms. He cannot understand why we were rejected at all. But, apparantly, our doctor's letter was misinterpreted and many of the things that my hubby needs assistance with were not even referred to or recorded in the reply to us!

Your post is very clear, concise and informative and I'm sure will be extremely helpful to anyone facing this issue.

I had to return to work full-time after my illness as I could not afford to go part-time....we have never ever got any help from the state at all. Even when my hubby was off work for over 12mnths when he had a coronary by-pass!

I have a feeling that if this situation continues, I may well be claiming it for myself with all the stress it is causing!!

How ironic - my husband has a heart attack , is hospitalised and comes home and then has to look after me because I become ill with a nervous and physical break-down and am off work for 6mnths!!

    Hey ho!

    Thanks once again

Yea the problem lies in the decision makers understanding of the nature of the illness, the DWP do provide guidelines but they are not really very in depth.
    Good luck with your appeal.

For anyone involved with any issues concerning benefits - particularly DLA and suchlike, the Benefits & Work website is amazing. Here's the link:

    http://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/

Part of the site is members only and you have to pay about £10 I think (I've forgotten). A lot of the information is free though. They have loads of stuff on how to fill in the various forms and piles of other stuff. Well worth a look.

Re: Filling In The Dla Form

I've just had a look at the site and decided to pay the annual subscription of £16.50 for the good advice there seems to be on there.

After the callous way I was treated by the Medical Services dept responsible for the medicals for the DWP I need to be much more knowledgable on the in's and outs, this seems to be just the right website to help with that.

Many thanks again - I feel these details should be made as a sticky thread for others in the same boat.
