    Tooth Abscess - PLEASE help

Hi Ive woken up this morning and yet agaimy my lower right molar is hurting a bit - mostly a dull throbbing feeling - not intense (yet). I had this problem about a year ago and he had to do deep root canal and a deep filling.
Last week it started up throbbing a little bit. I went to the dentist and when he tapped it it didnt hurt that much at all. He said an abscess might be developing underneath and because hes done so much to the tooth he'd have to remove it if it came to it. He gave me some amoxicillian to take for a week but said if the pain gets worse to come right back in. i think he expected me back a couple of days later to be honest but the pain died off as i took the antibiotics and i thought that was it.

Ive woken up with this dull pain and stupidly looked up 'tooth abscess' on google to see it says that if left can cause heart infection, BRAIN ABSCESS, pneumonia etc etc and i am freaking out. The old HA is back with a vengeance. I cant sit still, my heart is racing etc etc. Im convinced im going to now get one of those things. Please please help me. Im a right state and i have my 2year old daughter here and no one else :(

Im going to phone dentist today and just ask for it to be taken out. Will this stop it??? Please if anyone has any advice or experience of this i need your help asap.

    Thanks, Charlotte x

Those things are in the EXTREME worst case and I imagine you would have to ignore the abscess for a very long time before that could happen, like months or even years!
Google is not your friend! Go to the dentist and see what s/he advises. They know best!

Best get yourself to the dentist straight away, as he or she is the only one who can fix this. I had an acute peridontal abscess (gum absecss) in November which was very painful. Someone here gave me a great tip- don't lie down as this makes the pain worse. Prop yourself up when you are in bed with pillows so your head is raised. I hope you get this sorted out soon. The sooner you go to the dentist the sooner it will be over. Good luck

Ive got an appointment at 1115am thank god! But am a bit worried that he wont be able to take it out as i use Lidocain patches (5% anaesthetic patches) for my surgical pain in my tummy and it says on them to tell your dentist if you use them as if you have anaesthetic at the dentists it can cause too high levels in your body :( Am so upset :( Sorry to sound overdramatic but ive been through so much crap these past 4months (with my surgery going wrong and ending up in intensive care) that something as 'trivial' as toothache can send me over the edge :( xxxxxx

It's totally understandable why you're so upset, honestly try not to worry about things like anaesthetic until you get to the dentist and discuss it there. Not long to wait. Let us know how you get on!

I think how you are feeling is totally understandable too, there is nothing fun about going to the dentist and of course once we google something we make ourselves worry more.

I also take a medication that means I have to let my dentist know before I have any treatment done and it's never caused any problems. I'm sure your dentist will still be able to treat you properly.

As for your tooth maybe needing pulled, is it one that will notice if it's taken out? There are root canal specialists, called endodontists, who have specialist equipment that enables them to see any other small roots in the tooth that a regular dentist often misses. They are not cheap, but if this is an important tooth it might be worth asking about

I had a tooth abcess recently, well I'd had it for years but it came and went for a while so I had just hoped it would go away! My dentist had prescribed antibiotics but it kept coming back. However over the summer it started to hurt alot more and not to sound too disgusting, it began draining through my mouth. I knew the tooth would have to come out. My HA has been so bad recently and I KNOW that it started when I googled what could happen with abcesses. I was CONVINCED it was spreading through my body into my brain etc... I barely ate or slept. Anyway, it didn't spread obviously. At worst it made me feel just a bit "off", your immune system is fighting the infection obviously.
I have a major dental fear, my anxiety goes through the roof honestly, once I actually flailed and hit the dentist! But fortunately I found a great surgery, and they took an x-ray and told me I could either have root treatment which had no guarantee or get the tooth extracted. I chose the extraction and honestly it was NOTHING compared to what I thought it would be. I was expecting blood flying everywhere and choking etc... but none of that.
I'm so glad I got the tooth out though, it's SO worth the relief and it'll get rid of any anxiety you have regarding the abcess. It's also cured my dental fear, I think if I can go through that I deal with anything dental related!

Re: Tooth Abscess - PLEASE help

I had a tooth absess 5 days before my 18th birthday, woke up one day with a sore tooth and noticed a bit of swelling my 12 pm I had to go home from college because my side of my mouth was about the size of ( cant rely explain but imagine squeexing five grapes between your tooth and cheek, went to the docs and she said absess come back later, went home and was in so much pain I actually remember walking to the sofa and falling staight to sleep, at 4 when I got up to come back to the dentist i looked in the mirror and omg you should have seen my face looking back it is soo funny, if only i could figure a way to upload the picture of me. To best describe my face, well one half, and the whole hafl from my upper neck to my eye was about the size of a grape fruit and a bit. When i got to the dentist his face dropped, and said this is the biggest absess of all time lol, worst of all my fiance and family found it very amusing as my face was a balloon lol. Anyway after all that I was put on antibiotics and prayed I would not have half of my face looking like a silicone boob on ym 18th, luckily enough it went within that time. Then I had to have the god damn tooth out, and that is another story all together, including burning my tooth out, fileing my tooth pulling my tooth out and then having my mouth and gum stitched and after a week having them out. It was one of the worst things that has ever happened to me. And I survived no blood poisoning, no infections or anything scary just a mahoosive fat face. Don't worry you will be fine.

Ps I must find the picture it will make you feel a hundred percent better

    Amy xx

Well the good news was that he did an xray and there was no infection or abscess there which made me feel relieved BUT then he gave me a prescription for double strength amoxicillan for 7days because when he put me on it last week at 250mg the pain did die down??? I just want the tooth taken out im sick of it. he said he'll take it out if this course doesnt stop the pain. x

he will probs take out the tooth once the antibiotics are gone as the tooth will be prone to more flare ups and pain, although u mite have to wait a while as when ure have no serious infection its the usual wait xx
