advice needed

I'm new here and I was just wondering if anyone would like to give me some advice? I'm having a bit of a dilemma just now and it would be much appreciated.

anyway, I am currently taking 20mg of citalopram a day for depression and I'm not sure that it is really working as well anymore. I've recently started a new job which I'm not sure I like and the stress has just been rising and rising :(

additionally, my girlfriend is sad because I'm sad and this makes things worse :(

is it possible for medication to become less effective?

Oh dear, would I have any side effects if I went up to 40mg?

I haven't been on cit,but I've been on quite a few others in the past.
