    panic disorder for ever?

I am a bit disheartened by something that my therapist said. She said that I would probably always have panic disorder and would just have to learn to manage it. I find this a very negative way to view things. I mean I only developed it three years ago and my opinion is that if I didn't have it for the first 27 years of my life, doesn't that mean I should be able to get to a point where I am 100% panic free again?

I mean I know it seems far off now but with lots of work sin't it possible?

    Welcome Maya

What did your therapist train in? Plumbing? I wouldn't take her opinion as Gospel. There is many people that have overcome this.

I for one am a lot better 10 years on, and I have read about many people overcoming anxiety/depression.

So try and not get dis-heartened by one therapists opinion, and ask her next time you see her, when she was training, was she listening?

    Thank you Jaco.

She has been really good and has helped me a lot, that was why when she said that last session I was shocked. I am going back again today and will talk to her about it again.

    Hi
I was told this as well 10 yrs ago and althougth Im not 100% Ive learned to live with the feelings and developed effective coping strategies. My live is relatively "normal" but I admit I do still have anxiety and panic but it no longer has the same hold over me.
You can get better from this and there are some who are completely panic free so take some comfort in that.
Tell her how you feel about it and get her to explain why she said that - remember panic spirals becuase of our thoughts!
Let us know how you get on

    Hello Maya !
Panic attacks are a learned behaviour - they can be unlearned. Panic symptoms are normal reactions to a stressful situation which we feel more strongly because we are anxious. Don't be disheartened. It can be cured.
