it's driving me mad, the ear itches, i can't scratch deep enough

i'm getting over the flu, could it be from that?

Well I am experiencing the same thing which I got over the flu last month but I also had ear problem before then which is relate to the PA if you are experiencing PA you will have constant ear problems such as itchy, ringing, fluttering, pain and soreness Earache. My ear problems come and go but I notice when I did have the flu my earache came around night time when it got cool outside that is when it became irrated.

If you've had cold or the flu then it could be fluid (mucus) behind your ear drum, tickling it. If you think it might be that, you could try breathing in steam (you know, the towel over the head trick). I find putting a couple of drops of Olbas in hot water and breathing in the steam is quite good.
