Alcohole and liver problems

My brother had a liver count last week,he is an alcoholic.The count should be 0-35 his was 200.Basically the doctor told him if he doesn't stop now he will not live to old age.He was also told because of the sugar content in alcohol he is on border line diabetes.

Does anyone else have a family member like this!!!!!

You fight a losing battle with them,plus he is bipolar as well.Pulling the rest of the family down with him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry to hear about your brother depression ,anxiety ,etc makes people drink dont be to hard on him its an addiction, one that ive got myself into i had an abnormal liver function test and ive now asked for a dettox cos i know i need help does he want to stop? if he doesnt nothing anybody will say make him do it,its taken me a year or so to know i have got to stop and ive asked for the help hope all goes with it

I know its an addiction,but it affect's the family badley as well.We are watching him slowly kill himself.Thank you for replying and Im pleased you are getting help,hope it all goes well for you.

He want's to do it himself,and I know he can't.We have done all the detox many times before,in hospital and clinic's ect,AA and more.He is 38 and we have had this since he was 14.

thats a long time to have to go through it its is awful for a family to watch it im doing it mainly for my kids now i want to be around to see my grandkids in a few years time, ive been told its dangerous to do it yourself as it can cause fitting, maybe this time he will stick with a programme as been as its a matter of life or death i hope he does and wish you all the luck with it

My husband had a liver screening recently and it came back at 154. He has been refered to a liver specialist. Although he isnt a heavy drinker now he did used to drink all weekend. I am very concrned about this reading but he seems very blase about it, informing me he will 'sort' it out after the holidays in August. He also has high cholesterol and as he cant take the medication (side affects) he has taken this very seriously and is on a very low fat diet so why isnt he taking his liver seriously?
Arrrr he makes me so mad I wish I could just get it through to him he only has one liver and once thats gone, well hes gone too. I feel like Im beating my head against a brick wall sometimes.

Carol,I understand what you are going through to.

My brother used to be a binge drinker at one time,now he drinks so much he need's one first thing in the morning.He has been on meds to help come off the drink as soon as he stop's he is back on the drink.He has alot of mental health issues to.But we as a family can't do any more for him.

oh no that is really sad when it gets to that stage. I had a drink problem 3 years ago because i used the drink thinking that it was helping my anxiety. I had some yellow patches come up on my skin and really did think i had liver cirrhosis. When i got my results back from the liver function blood test back well i didn't have cirrhosis but i got told that i had an abnormal liver function so that was enough to make me get off the alcohol and i had to go through a reduction plan as it is dangerous to stop completely due to the side effects. I have been informed by my therapist that i am allowed the odd one or two drinks occasionally but i tend not to bother now unless it is on special occasions. I also look back now and think why the hell did i get myself into that state? It just wasn't worth it!

Well done Sandy I think he needs to do this,he was craving tonight but he did phone AA and went to a meeting,he need's to come off gradually not just stop.

Im sure you remember the hassles I had with my cousin Mike who was an alchoholic and eventually killed himself by setting fire to himself so I know what you are going through

The scarey thing is you dont have to be an alchoholic to have liver problems....I have just got over liver failure as you know and I considered what I drank of an evening to be quite normal!!!

The good news is tho if you can get him to cut down or give up for a few weeks then his liver will recover....its the only organ in the human body that can regenerate itself

Im allowed to drink again and I do so but much less than I used to!!!!

I cant believe after what the doctor told him, tonight he was drunk!!!!!!

He started drinking from this morning coming out with all the excuses under the sun,thinking I was born under a bloody bush!!!!!!!!!!!

He said 5 bottle's of wine would make him drunk now it only take's 2

He is destroying his mum and dad,and I have to watch it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
