Re: Globus Hystericus??? (not so hysterical)

Im so bloomin fed up with this globus, (as well as a load of other stress symptoms), had it now since Feb. I am too currently experiencing a lot of stress and have been prescribed citalopram which I have been avoiding taking as I dont like pills and also too scared of the side effects, but I have tried everything else, diet, excercise, reiki, hypnotherapy, massage, a whole host of vitamins and supplements, affirmations and nothing has worked, so looks like the pills might just win as Im out of ideas :-(

    Hello Everyone

This is my first time on this website, I've just sent it up a few minutes ago, I have suffered with the same throat probelm for some time now, the first time it started I was about 13 and it was horrible doz it startd on Christmas Day and I couldn't eat my christmas dinner, a few weeks after it started again, and it lasted for about five months, it got to the point that I couldn't eat at all exept for things like skips, during the last three years I have been severely agoraphobic and over the course of those years it had started up again, luckily it is not as bad as it was before, I can eat but everytime I do I feel like I'm choking and so I can not eat during the day when I am on my own.

Hello, for the young person that is worried about taking citalopram, I have been on them for the last two years, and they are pretty good, the one great thing about them is that they are not addictive unlike some other anxiety pills, and they don't have really any side affects, unfornately for me, I'm so used to it now that they hardl help me, however when I first started taking them I feel so different, I was chatty and happy and full of confidence and so I say to all of thoses who are worried about taking them is, trust your doctor and give them a try.

Well, I took the plunge and started on the citalopram 7 weeks ago, but I still have this lump in my throat. I think it did pass off for a bit as I cant remember feeling it 24/7, but I have had a particularly stressful weekend and it is back with a vengance

Apart from worrying me silly, it is really uncomfortable. Has anyone else had any luck beating this dreadful affliction??

    Hi Canada girl,
I'm new to the site so hello from the Uk.
I have globus Hystericus. Mine is bought on by stress, smells like perfume and air fresheners and cold weather. Icecream, icecubes...
I find that gentle throat massage down the sides of the larynx works.
Small gentle cirles and strokes to the sides.
Always wearing a scarf in cold weather .

Yawning helps me to release the muscles and a throat specialist from the hospital taught me how to release by saying "why me" with the back of your tongue up at the back of your pallet and saying it with a big grin and eyebrows-top of face up (as if startled. sounds totally rediculous but it works. It has really helped me.
    All the best Clinky

Re: Globus Hystericus??? (not so hysterical)

holy cow my story is the same as so many here.. its amazing how anxiety can turn from something i grew up supressing telling myself "its all in your head" to very real physical conditions. I've been to the doc twice and yes i (still a lil lol) diagnised myself with cancer which ive had in one form or another (in my mind) since i was like 12.. I'm now 37. Doctor says everything seems very normal via manual exam while swallowing and looking. Follow up in four weeks to consider barium swallow.. further tests. However Just reading these threads i had not found before are pointing to what i suspected.. i've got issues. I had very bad trouble sleeping but was/am able to get around that with ambien.. i think i may have just chased a demon out of my sleep(lessnesness) and into my throat. I'll continue to check this thread for advise. thanx!

Hello Everyone!! Just thought I'd add my two penyworth to the discussion.

I had globus about 25 years ago. It lasted about a year then disappeared. But last year it returned with a vengeance! I can normally sleep ok, but as soon as I wake up I think about my throat and whether I'll get thro the day without a panic attack. Warm drinks help and I can eat ok. My throat feels very dry almost all the time.

I get a tightness roughly where the tonsils are and it seems to be back of my tongue downwards - like the feeling of mumps. It can and often does change sides as the day progresses. My throat gets so tight that I find it really hard to talk. It's like I've got a speech problem as I tend to slur when my throat gets bad - I guess thats because the spasm affects my tongue. I also feel like I got something tight wrapped round my throat.

In a state of despair, I asked the doc to send me for a camera down my throat. Had this done (it doesn't hurt, just feels a bit weird) and the consultant said my throat looked fine - in fact he said it looked very good!

I'm so fed up with this ruling me - globus dictates if and when I go out, and what I take with me (bottles of water, boiled sweets to lubricate my throat - but then I worry about getting the sweet stuck in my throat!!)

Reading your posts helps a lot - I'm so so glad I found this forum. Hugs to everyone xxx

I have lump in throat issues again accpet this time I am really convinced something is really wrong :( like I actually look swolen round there at my neck! but I dunno then if I am imagining that too. Ggaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh

Just now I feel like I need to keep clearing phlegm from my throat by swallowin and when I do it is like something moves back in the same place..my chin actually feels swollen right under my chin like windpipe and down at where your throat meets your collar bones..almost feels like into my chest there is alump.

I am TERRIFIED it is cancer.

I cant hack much more to be honest

does anyone share these types of symptoms?

Re: Globus Hystericus??? (not so hysterical)

    Hi there!

I've suffered from this condition on and off for about 10 years and it's only today that I've been given a name for it and it is such a relief! It is difficult to describe to others; a feeling of being strangled, difficult to breathe and swallow etc, without sounding like a freaky hypochondriac!!

Each time the condition has flared up, I've been prescribed Prozac, which I take for about 3 months or so and the symptoms vanish completely within a couple of days of starting the course. At first, I was apprehensive to take medication that was associated with depression, because it has negative connotations and I certainly don't feel depressed! However, it solves the problem and, as I said, I've only taken a short course to get rid of the symptoms. Sadly though, this Globus Hystericus does rear it's ugly head every couple of years or so, but I just get a short course of Prozac and life can return to normal.

I hope that some members find this useful :-)

Re: Globus Hystericus??? (not so hysterical)

    Hey there.
I thought i was the only one. This is a really scary condition but it is all in your mind. I have recently been having panic attacks wich are brought on by your brain and now i have globus AGAIN wich is also brought on by your brain. It can do awful things to you. I have obviously been really stressed out lately and having the sensation of something lodged in your throat doesnt make things any easier. You really do need to calm yourself though or you will end up driving yourself insaine wich i have done a few times. Just get a duvet sit on the sofa and feel sorry for yourself for a bit and calm yourself take a few days off of work or whatever it is you do and just take some time for yourself. This is a sign that you have too much stress and you need to find the source of it. Maybe councelling will help that is going to be my next step anyway. Also poor diet can cause acid reflux so you need to think about that also. Try not to eat acidic things like tomatoes and fruit also try cutting out fat for a week and then slowly introduce it again. Stress doesnt just go away so you need to do things that will make you feel up-beat and make you less tense. Get your partner to massage you go out and have fun with your friends no matter how hard it is to feel happy with this thing in your throat.

If it is really bugging you demand that your doctor referrs you to the ear nose and throat clinic so your throat can be looked and as just having the peace of mind that there is nothing in your throat can calm you.

It is hard to cope with i really do know as it makes me want to break down and cry sometimes wich is also ok. But you really need to start thinking possitivly and try and get into a better happier and healthier mindset as it is in most cases stress related.

    I hope i have helped.
