NEEDLE PHOBIC - need blood tests

I was petrified to have blood taken, I sat in my car out the front of the pathology lab for an hr, finally i mustered up enough courage and went in.
My heart was running a million miles.
I was speaking to myself in my head just reassuring myself that i can do this, so many people have it done it can not be that bad.

I chose to lay down, as if you are scared etc the nurse said it is best to lay.
I looked to the other side and she asked me to take a deep breath and when she said small sting to breath out.
To be honest, it didn't really hurt, I mean you can feel it for sure but the needle is soooo sharp it slides right in.
Once it is in, it doesn't hurt it is more you can just feel something is there.
It was all over in a matter of 30 seconds, would have been less had I not been so tense as it is harder for the blood to flow out.

See my problem is i have to look cos i get worried she'll do it before im ready if i don't keep an eye on it... im totally fine til i actually get in the room then i burst into tears and start hyperventilating... Im DETERMINED to get it done this time. I will get it done, it is no big deal, thousands of people have it done every day and I will feel good if I get it done...

just reading you posts, my husband was prescribes diazapam very low dose which he took an hour before (not this last time) he said it did calm him down a lot! good luck you'll be fine, let us know how you get on. remember 1 step at a time minute by minute,

Hi everyone! I did it!! I cant believe it. My doctor gave me valium before and i was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo calm it helped so much i honestly cant believe it the doctor couldnt believe how calm i was it went great! I didnt even cry!

wow that's so good! even on a valium I'm sure it was still hard for you!
I actually enjoy having my blood taken but then I like piercings and all that needle stuff haha.
I had blood taken before from my wrist and I cried the whole time because the doctor was useless!
I knew a guy who ended up in hospital and the nurse came at him with a needle and he pushed her away.
I totally understand how when you phobic you will do anything to get out of that situation! Phobias are irrational after all!

Thanks for the support everyone, it means a lot!! Im so proud of myself I've been telling everyone how good I was. Perhaps we should turn this into a needle phobic thread, so we can offer each other support and work on GETTING OVER OUR IRRATIONAL FEAR!!
