    Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome

    Symptoms

The biggest clue to Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome is the presence of vague dizziness accompanied by a lot of other seemingly unrelated symptoms, which might include any of the following:

    • shortness of breath for no apparent reason
    • frequent sighing or yawning
    • chest pains
    • heart palpitations
    • sweating
    • syncope (fainting)
    • dizziness
    • trembling
    • slurred speech
    • cold, tingling, or numb lips or extremities
    • nausea or irritable bowel syndrome
    • aching muscles or joints, or tremors
    • tiredness, unsteadiness, or diffuse weakness
    • restless sleep, insomnia, or nightmares
    • sexual problems
    • anxiety or phobias
    • fear that perhaps you're a hypochondriac
    • dry mouth
    • pressure in throat or difficulty swallowing
    • bloating, belching, flatulence, or abdominal pain
    • impaired memory or concentration
    • confusion / disorientation
    • tinnitis (ringing in ears)
    • headaches
    • blurred vision, tunnel vision, double vision, or flashing lights
    • tachycardia (rapid pulse)
    • depression
    • erratic blood pressure

So many members have been posting recently about "difficulty breathing", or not being able to take a "deep breath" - together with all the other nasty symptoms they are experiencing.
There is a book by Dinah Shore which is half explanitory and half self help about the above syndrome. Dinah Shore is a physiotherapist from New Zealand who specialises in respitory physio. The book is excellent, easy to read and explains the condition in full and in simple language.

I have suffered with this for years and know how unpleasant and frightening it can be. It also know how it can excaserbate anxiety/panic and spiral into an uncontrollable cycle of misery.

Of course, you should get checked out medically - but if nothing else is found to be causing your breathing problems, please look into this.

    I hope this helps.

I have just found this book on W H Smith site and it was under £5. On Amazon it was a lot more expensive. I have just ordered it. Thanks very much for your help.

    Re: Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome

Is it possible to have Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue and Depersonalization all in one go?

I may have Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome due to my over breathing, gasps for air, feeling detached, feels like my nose is pegged...

    Re: Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome

    Hi,
I am suffering really badly with overbreathing at the moment. I keep slipping in to this thoracic breathing & then I get anxious about it & try to breathe abdominally etc but I just end up focussing too much on my breathing. I have 2 meditation cd's but they get you to focus on your breathing & observe it but I just end up overbreathing again.

I did some research & saw this book & wondered how helpful it is. I also looked in to the Buteyko method but there aren't any practitioners near me. I am desperate for someone to help me but if you go to the doctors they check you out & say it's just chronic hyperventilation but they don't offer any support. I once asked about seeing a physio specialising in this but they said they don't have any clinics for this.
The frustrating thing is that I believe this is at the root of a lot of the symptoms that make me feel anxious such as palpitations, chest discomfort & fatigue.
I am going to order the book anyway but just wondered how helpful people have found it. I think it got very good reviews on Amazon.
