Hey good to hear the gastro doc gave him a positive diagnosis. 
To answer your question, I have been on and off PPI's myself many times and I do recall having rebound acid reflux every time I got off them, but the acid reflux seemed to fluctuate after getting off the PPI's. Some days were good with no acid reflux and some days I would have it. It seemed to come and go. Yet I blame that on being highly stress with panic disorder and not eating right too, but it could be different for anybody else who gets off the PPI's.
Hey speaking of "stress related", has he gotten a appointment with a CB therapist yet? CBT really help me with my stress and I noticed a difference with my acid reflux not acting up as much as it use to, since I started CB therapy a couple of years ago.
