Tonsils removed aged 5 but one is now swollen!?!

I really would appreciate some feedback on what the ENT specialist told me today. I'll be worried silly for the coming weeks.

He said that my 'lump in the throat sensation' is caused by a swelling of tonsillar tissue (right side, just over my tongue, looks like a tiny bunch of grapes) where one of my tonsils used to be. I can see it and have been concerned about it.

He asked me if I have any allergies and I told him that I suffer from hayfever and that my swallowing 'problem' dates back to August. At the time I was doing some work in the attic/loft and stupidly didn't wear a dust mask - this is only a possible reason.

He said it was most likely just an allergic reaction to something.... but bearing in mind that I had lost weight he is sending me for a barium swallow test in two weeks time 'to put my mind at rest'. I won't know the result until January so there is no santa for me this year :-(

Is he just letting me down gently or has anybody heard of this kind of thing?

Any feedback, good or bad greatly appreciated.

    E

If you have your barium in two weeks and there is an urgent problem you will know before Santa is even due - never mind January.

Your anxiety is the human representation of the pictures that you paint using your many vivid colours of revolving and reoccurring thoughts.

Thank you Meg. You do a very long shift! You're a really great person.

The ENT specialist put a camera down my throat and found nothing down there. However, the tonsil swelling needs to be checked out.

I'll stop posting stuff here is I am sounding increasingly pathetic. I probably amn't part if this club as I may have a very real and serious health problem.

I'll face my fate like a man.

    Thanks to everybody here.

    Hi S n S

Just cos you have a real health problem doesn't mean the anxiety isn't real and probably more difficult to cope with than the problem! People with healh anxieties do get sick unfortunately!

I have had a lot of throat problems - my tonsils apparently 'withered away'! and I have some lumps (not nodes) on my vocal chords! I have to have it checked every year and I panic every time. The tissue in the throat area is very sensitive and lumps and bumps do come and go quite often.

I hope it is all cleared up for you very very soon.

I'm glad you're getting it checked out

    Hi
Imtrying to remember back a long way here and im sure that Meg may be able to correct me but i think that when you have your tonsils removed as a child they guillitine them and dont actually dig them out of their beds (sounds awful) so some tonsil tissue remains and indeed in some cases people actually find they grow again. So if you still have some tonsil tissue then it is possible for it to become inflamed. Did the lump in your throat come before you found the tonsil tissue or after. Its just i have recently been to ent as i have really hard lump in tonsil bed which they think is probably calcified tonsil tissue. The ENT people are pretty spot on with their stuff and my guy told me that anything nasty in these areas presents itself quite clearly and is usually easily identified by the specialist. Take heart by the fact that he hasnt seen anything to concern him. The barium is probably as he said just to reassure you, your weight loss is prob due to your anxiety and the fact that you might not have been eating as much as before. Meg is right also though in the fact that they wont make you wait any length of time if your swallow is not normal..... which im sure it will be
    take care

    Hello Nell,

I felt the 'lump' before I noticed the tonsil swelling. I'm not sure of the significance. I have been checking my throat thirty times a day for the last two months! It's a horrific looking thing. At least he found nothing with the camera.

One thing I now remember doing shortly before I felt the lump was reading a leaflet on cancer of the oesophagus. Drinking, smoking ...... I just had to have that disease!

Many thanks for your post. It concurs with what I have been told. I can enjoy the remainder of my weekend now. I think I'll have a glass of wine and a Havana!

    Thank you Nell,

    E
