    Dry mouth, tongue

So, twice this week I have had the worst dry tongue. My mouth isn’t really dry, as I’m producing enough saliva and my gums and cheeks are wet. But my tongue (clear into my throat) feels so dry. I have been moving it around a lot when I notice this, and rubbing it with my teeth. I’ve also been rubbing it on the roof of my mouth and now the roof of my mouth feels weird.

I am allergic to gluten and I’m worried that this is a sign of Sjogrens, as it’s another AI issue. I also have read it can be caused by anxiety but I have been dealing with anxiety for 10 years and this is totally new to me. I haven’t had a panic attack in ages. I have no idea why my mouth suddenly feels like this. Can anyone relate? I don’t want to schedule an appointment with my doctor or with a specialist unless I know I’m not being irrational.

Also, I know it’s not a lack of fluids. I drink a lot of water. And even on days when I forget, I haven’t had this. I’m also swallowing a ton.

    Hi,
I've had something similar in the past which could also be Sjogrens as I also have CFS and intermittant IC. Sjogrens can come and go in flares and doesn't need to be progressive. Try chewing some sugar-free gum and sip liquids through a straw. Drinking lots of water keeps you hydrated and is good for you.

ps. Stress and anxiety make dryness issues worse. People with autoimmune conditions are more prone to anxiety, depression and panic attacks.

    Re: Dry mouth, tongue

I’ve had anxiety for 35 yrs on/ off
The last 6 years I have only what I can’t really describe properly
My mouth becomes dry and my tongue/mouth as a weird taste. If I put my tongue near my gums they feel weird like inflamed (had them check out normal) and they look fine

This is defo anxiety related as when anxiety is high the mouth thing is well in form
I have never had this before only last 6 years.

I’m not on any meds. It seems like when my mouth feels like this I spend a lot of time swallowing swallowing swallowing. That makes my soft palate feel dry and I wonder if it’s whats making my tongue feel weird. I k is the tongue is sensitive and it’s not difficult to make it sore. I seem to have enough saliva in my mouth and have no problem eating. I hate blaming everything on stress and anxiety but maybe that’s what’s going on. I just don’t want to spend tons of money on tests if this is all stress related.

I should also say that I had my teeth cleaned on Wednesday and my hygienist and dentist said my mouth and teeth look great. They didn’t say anything about my mouth being dry. I didn’t mention this to them as it had only happened once at that point.....but I assume my dentist and hygienist would have noticed if my mouth were dryer than normal.

Frankly, I think this I totally psychological. You're hyper-focusing and doing behaviors (excessive swallowing) that are just reinforcing your irrational concerns. You have plenty of saliva and have no trouble swallowing so...

    Positive thoughts

You’re probably right. The only time I have problems swallowing are when I do it with nothing to swallow. I think the sides of my tongue feel raw, most likely from rubbing them along my teeth. I just don’t like blaming everything on anxiety if it’s something of actual concern, and it’s hard to discern between the two.

Sorry for bumping an old post ^^"

As others have said your dry mouth is probably anxiety related. Like, almost guanteed.

I couldn't help but comment though as you mentioned sjogrens and sjogrens never comes up
I was diagnosed with it last November. It's really no big deal ^^

Hello. Came across your post here and thought i would get in touch for some of your thoughts. Im very scared at the moment about my dry mouth. Just absolutely freaking out. I have had this now since July of this year. So going on now about 2 months. Im honeslty wondering if and how anxiety could cause anything like this. Is it really possible. I am so dry at the moment that i feel that i dont have any saliva at all. And that is no joke. So very dry throat and mouth. No saliva!!! I had very bad stress and then have become fixated on this issue. Its about all i think about. Wakes me up a few times in the night etc. Very scary new experience. Im just wondering how long something like this could really go on for. I have never had anything like this in the past. It all started with my tongue getting sore when i was speaking. Now talking has become really tough. I have been to the dentist twice now and she said she thinks its anxiety. Could not find anything wrong. Also had a diabetes and thyroid test and those were all ok. Im a male, 44. Also have dry nasal passages. But yes super scared here and wanting to hear from others about how real this can really get. I was diagnosed with Fibro years ago but thankfully it hasent slowed me down so much. I even do crossfit. Ive not yet had any tests for Sjögrens and i guess just wondering if something like this has come about from chronic stress and anxiety. Have done way too much googling and i am a bit of a hypochondriac myself. Thanks so much! C
