Sertraline Discontinuation - Now bleeding for two weeks?!

Hi There,

I'm really hoping someone can help me with this!

I have been taking 50mg of Sertraline daily for the last 10 months, but two weeks ago I decided I wanted to reduce my dose and stop taking them all together. My doctor advised that I begin by taking my tablet every other day for a few weeks, then every 3 days and then stop altogether.

5 days into my reduced dosage, I started to 'spot', despite the fact that I still had 4 days left of my contraceptive pill. Two weeks later, there has not been one day where I haven't been bleeding. It began with just spotting (that weird brown stuff), then it became more of a period with fresh blood, then back to the brown stuff and so on. Today it's the heavy period phase all over again! I have been on the contraceptive pill for over 12 years (I'm 27) and I have never experienced anything like this.

I've done a bit of research on this and there does appear to be a link between SSRI's and menstration? Is this true? My doctor told me he doesn'y know of any links between Sertraline and periods and told me to call back in a week if I'm still experiencing symptoms, but I can't stop worrying.

Does anyone have any advice or have you gone through the same thing?

I was on the same med, never had an issue, stress, hormone changes can mess with us, even menopause symptoms can start ten years early don't say 27 is too young my great grandmother went through it at 28 and someone I know at 38, I am not saying that is what is going on with you, perhaps talk to your doctor if you keep doing it and schedule a pap or check by OBGYN

Thanks for getting back to me. I was thinking it was to do with a hormone imbalance. It just seems so coincidental that this happens as soon as I start coming off Sertraline!

My doctor told me to call him back tomorrow if I'm still experiencing the symptoms - wish me luck!
