My doctor gave me Promethazine to help me go sleep as i havent been sleeping well...

It says take half to one tablet a night

Do i take half or one tablet :/

I have had these too. I was unable to sleep after my Father died in April. I haven't used any. They are an anti histamine with a strong sedative effect. They are also used for travel sickness and as a sedative. EJ

Hi,
I think you should follow your doctor's instruction.

Here, in Australia, promethazine comes in 25mg tabs, and for sleep aid, the recommended dose is between 25mg-75mg at night.

I myself never use it.
( Well , it is actually a Phenothiazine derivative, with antiemetic effects. Phenothiazines are actually antipsychotics like Chlorpromazine, Stelazine,etc).

I used to use the OTC sleep aid such as Unisom ( Diphenhydramine) 50mg liquid capsules. ( It's the same active ingredient as in Benadryl). But, some how, it just didn't work for me.

Then I switched to Dozile ( Doxylamine Succinate) 25mg in liquid capsules.
This one worked for me.

Well, everyone react differently even to the same medication, and the best advice to seek is your own doctor who knows your condition better.

I agree with Geoff.. take half and see how that goes. Promethazine can be bought over-the-counter in pharmacies in the form of Sominex (a mild sleep aid).

As stated above it is an anti-histamine - millions of people around the world use anti-histamines for allergies like hay fever with no problems. They are one of the safest medications around. So don't worry you will not do yourself any harm.
