Food stuck?

I posted something here http://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/showthread.php?t=46112 yesterday but have had a different idea about my condition. I wondered whether I might have food stuck in my throat...

1) Anyone any idea, if this is possible after 4.5 weeks?
2) If something was stuck, would I have swelling in my throat etc (foreign body)?
3) Would I be able to eat food quite normally?
4) Could I demand that my GP send me for an X-ray or do I have to wait for my ENT appointment to come through?

Hi hun

A feeling of something being stuck in your throat is very common with anxiety. When I was acute, I had this and it lasted awhile, it is harmless but If you don't know what your dealing with, ohhh boy, the mind runs away with you, putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 5 (worse case scenario )

You can, go back to your gp and ask for an xray, of course you can.

Thanks for your reply and links etc.

Do you know if the something stuck in the throat sensation applies to things other than the lump sensation? What I mean is that I have the lump feeling but also have the feeling that there is something sharp in there too like a crisp or piece of crust etc. I've had that for nearly 5 weeks so kind of hope it couldn't possibly be anything.

Do you think my doc would send me for an x-ray? Won't he just tell me to wait for my ENT?

I had this feeling constantly for a year a few years back, at times when I swallowed I'd hear a clicking sound. Anyway several times I had a panic over this, especially when it felt like I was breathing and swallowing through a straw.

I went to A&E when the clicking sound started and they did an xray and put a scope down my throat to look around. Know what they found? Nothing, pretty much, the ENT consultant they called down looked at the xray and said my hyoid bone was slightly out of place and this might account for the clicking, but as I'd not had any recent trauma to my throat or had any problem breathing it was likely a defect I'd had from birth exacerbated by my anxiety.

The sharp feeling you bring up could well mean you've "scratched" your throat with something, if it's not an issue after five weeks it's not going to be now. These scratches can often be caused by swallowing badly, especially when you're tense and they'll fade when they heal up, which can take a while as you're going to constantly be putting other things down there when you eat.

My advice? It's not food, period, food would have dissolved by now, even a chicken or fish bone would have been eaten away by enzymes and the odd reflux of acid you're going to get even if you don't notice it. After five weeks the chances of it being food are virtually nil.

Try to relax, gargle some warm salt water, try not to think of it it you can. Ultimately if it worries you and continues then see your doctor or ENT and let them give you the reassurance.

Bless you Chris...that's excellent information. I don't have the clicking noises like you but I did want to make clear here that I do indeed have the lump like a lot of people here but my actual issue was the sharp sensation...that's my worry. Thankfully you have put my mind at ease, at least over the potential food caught scenario. I'm taking tabs for GERD so hopefully that will clear everything up before my ENT appointment (don't know the date yet).

I have had this for about 3 weeks now and my throat even feels sore when swallowing.It even feels like the food is still in my throat even after I have swallowed.I went to my GP and he looked at my throat and he said it was all fine, and anxiety related.
I have noticed that, when I don't think about it, it isn't there.

Did you have the sharp feeling too?...I only ask as I know the lump feeling is very common...and I do have that too, but it's the object caught sensation I'm having mainly...could be a cut, could be like a blister??
