Hi i went to the dentist last week, Been having numbness down left side off face Cheekbone, around lips and chin the dentist took a panoramic xray and said he would phone me if any thing wrong that was last week so i phoned just to check and was told that he had sent the xray off to a hospital for a second opinion.

And he is now away until tomorrow and the other staff will not tell me the out come.
I am scared stiff it could be something non tooth related like a cancer "could a dentist pick that up and would a dentist tell you that"

And why send the xray to a hospital and not ask a fellow dentist in the same place

Also look at it this way - when you get the results and it is all good, you can be extra sure it is because more than one doctor looked at it.

There is a radiologist at the hospital who is trained in reading x-rays.
Oral cancer usually does not cause numbness, but TMJ can and that sometimes shows up on x-rays.
The nerve that runs along your jaw and under the wisdom teeth shows up on x-rays and that is the nerve responsible for the numbness you get in your face.
Of course it isn't the only cause of numbness, anxiety or being low in b12 can cause it too.
if you clench your jaw a lot the nerve can get irrated by all the pressure and tension causing numbness.

Yes you got it my nerve/route canal is as the dentist said is uncommonly wide and one of my wisdom teeth seems to half way into it on the side I am having problems with so that could be causing the numbness and pains I am getting.
Just have to wait 6-8 weeks for a dental specialist to contact me to discuss whats next.

Thanks folks for the help.
