I cant see any replies on here to the above post so I just wanted to say that I too had problems swallowing (or it felt like it) and I was told by my Doctor that it has to do with the stress and anxiety. Its a symptom - a common one at that - that you feel tight throated and cant swallow properly. I still get this on and off. Ia lso thought I had throat cancer and I guess the only way you can be sure you dont is to insist on a test. HOWEVER my step-grandad has throat cancer and it was extremely obvious when he discovered he was sick. I panic about illness as part of my anxiety. DONT scare yourself by looking up things on the internet. Visit your doctor or go to a walk in centre if you really feel the need..but keep trying to tell yourself its probably nothing othern than a sign of anxiety! :0) x

Clair welcome to NMP

The more you panic about it the more it causes you to tense up hence your syptoms get worst. Before I realised what was wrong with me I had a feeling of a lump in my throat felt like I couldn't swallow properly. I'd sit there for hours trying to make myself swallow. I had pains which would shoot from my shoulder up my neck and all across the back of my head and across my face.

The throat and the pains in the back of your head is all realated its all down to muscles. The best adivce I can give you is what I found helpful put some muscle rub like deep head over your neck and get your boyfriend to give it a good rub, try to get it right up into the hair line. If you don't like the smell of deep head the try a wheat bag or hot water bottle but try not to cook your brain :D

You'll know when you got it in the right place and it gives you a excuse to put your feet up and relax for a bit.

It will go away gradually but you have to not worry about it, it gets worst if you do. Hope this helps and you feel better soon.:hugs:

I have had that one too - lump in my throat and difficulty swallowing. I saw my doctor and they said it was a common symptom of anxiety. It's horrid though and made me feel really like I had cancer or something, my grandma died of throat cancer. It has gone now thank goodness.

Hi claire , i totally sympathise with you, i had the same for about a year when i first got anxiety 10 years ago, i even went to a throat specialist as i couldnt swallow solid food. it is called globus hystericus and it eventually went away when i stopped obsessing about it. IT WILL GO AWAY I PROMISE X

Hi claire

I'm Amy, Just joined today too :)

I know where your comming from. I used to wake up each night with a what felt like a swelling in my throat and convinced myself it was cancer, but by the morning it had gone but would return every night. Thanks to the people who replied - I didnt realise this was a recognised sign of anxiety. Keep at It Claire x
