Hey Fizzbomb,

Welcome to the fantastic website. You will find so much support here.

Sorry to hear that you are feeling a little 'off' at the moment. Panic attacks are quite frightening aren't they, but you know what, THEY NEEDN'T BE !!

Everything our body does happens for a reason. I don't know why you have your panic attacks or what triggers them off, but for every physical sensation that you are feeling there is a logical explanation.

Trouble is, it's just getting your brain to realise this and to stop turning to the negative thoughts for a reason.

For example, if you get a headache or a migraine your brain could send out a 'trigger' negative thought like - it's the start of a brain tumour, when really, rationally, it's just a headache. You could be dehydrated, or you could need glasses and suffer from eye strain. SIMPLE.

If you feel lightheaded or dizzy, this could set off a panic attack because you don't know what is happening to your body and you're frightened of fainting - when really you could be feeling light headed because perhaps you haven't eaten for a couple of hours, or your sugar levels are low. SIMPLE.

Do you see what I mean, don't dwell on the negative horrible thoughts that are trying to trigger you into having a panic attack.

When we are frightened, our adrenaline levels go all over the place. This is what causes the 'butterflies' in the stomach sensation. It's just your nerve endings in your stomach releasing adrenaline. You just need to remain totally and utterly calm, let these sensations happen AND NEVER FIGHT AGAINST THEM, this just fuels your panic. Just take very deep breaths, blow out slowly through your mouth and feel your heart beat come back down to normal. Then, once you are calm again, just try to rationalise what made you panic and give it a more realistic explanation.

I've suffered with panic and high anxiety for a number of years, but now I know what is happening to my body, I am finding that I can control my symptoms now and I can honestly say I have not had a panic/anxiety attack for at least 18 months now.

It may sound easy for me to say but if you don't fight the panic and just let the symptoms happen and wash over you, you will become better and you will be able to handle them your way.

So, keep looking on this website for other suggestions of help and advice and I wish you all the very best for the future. Feel free to send me a PM if you like, I'm always around if you need an ear !!

Best wishes

Hi Fizzbomb

I've just found this site today as well - what a huge relief to read some of the posts - I can liken myself to pretty much all of them!

I am taking fluoxetine and have been doing so for the last 6 weeks. I think it works very gradually but I'm sure it has straigtened a few things out for me. I am still suffering from anxiety, particularly the physical symptoms (chest pain, tightness) but I feel more rational now.

Good luck to you Fizzbomb and welcome - you are certainly not alone - since I registered early this afternoon I think there have been a further 4 or so new members - just in one day. Just goes to show how many sufferers there are.

Janie :)
