In the last 2 years or so as soon as my head hits the pillow every night - i start getting unexplained mild anxiety, symptoms of worry, and feeling like my head is going to drive me a bit crazy but I soon drift off to sleep.... however for a long while I have been given 5mg tablets of diazepam to take each night to ease the anxiety. most nights all is OK - but for some reason, and there is no pattern to it, but I awake jolted out of sleep with an overwhelming fear and my mind pulling in all directions at about 2 or 3am... It's so horrible however it only lasts about 3-5 seconds and i'll go to sleep again. does anyone know why this could be happening? - the only other time I get jerks/jolts of anxiety is the day after a period of drinking alchohol when I also have to take diazepam. I have no anxiety during the day. I do take Sulpiride and Escitalopram every morning in a low dose however my doctor is not specialised and I am unsure who to be referred to, to rid me of this anxiety attack. I would also like to come off all meds. Thanks. (perhaps an anxiety specialist in London).

I'd hazard an "easy" guess at adult night terrors, because although you are only awake for 3-5 seconds you may have been having the same symptoms in your sleep. http://www.stanford.edu/~dement/adultterrors.html

However, my curious mind begins to wonder when you mention having anxiety after drinking alcohol, as there must be some link between the relaxation of the middle of a night's sleep and the relaxation of being under the influence of alcohol?
