Hey all,

Im new to this forum and found it in a desperate attempt to overcome this social anxiety. It's ruining my life so much so i walked out of work the other day (which is so unlike me as i worry about not having stability and crave security). I have an intense fear of groups of people talking to me or looking at me. I got bright red and my heart races and i feel sick even if someone says hi or mentions my name. It's stopping me from doing what I want to do. I have one more year of uni and then I'll have to endure change which i think is really going to destroy me.

A year ago i was put on 20mg of paroxetine a day and reffered to a therapist who then refferred me to a psychologist. I have been on the waiting list for 8 mths now and so have looked into something a bit different. I phoned up a local hypnotheropist who specialises in dealing with those sufferring from social anxiety and phobias. It costs £40 a session of which for a poor student is gonna take break the bank. But i'm desperate to stop feeling this way. Has any1 else tried this sort of treatment? how has it worked for you?

thanks

Jenna,

I tried hypnotherapy for my fear of being sick.
Now it was good, very relaxing and i am heaps, heaps better, but i am not cured! I still fear it, and panic when i feel sick, but i can cope a lot better then i did. Whether is was the therapy, councelling, meds, me just kicking myself into shape, or a mixture of it all, i dont know!!

Make sure you get a good recommendation and check their qualifications. You dont want to be wasting your money!!!

Good luck love x

Hi Jenna

I have social anxiety and when I joined this forum 2 years ago I wouldn't speak to anyone apart from people I knew very well.

Since that time I've had some help from a hypnotherapist and have also used hypnosis downloads and CDs. I am in treatment at a day hospital for a number of issues and have improved so much with my social anxiety that I am able to speak to people there and even contribute to group discussions at times. This was something I thought would be impossible at one time.

I would say that hypnosis combined with regular practise at being with other people and speaking have helped me enormously. Finding a hypnotherapist you have a good rapport with is vital and, as Nigel suggested, it is worth asking about concessions as some therapists do offer reduced rates for those on limited incomes.

If you can afford to go ahead I would suggest giving it a try. I found hypnotherapy really beneficial.
