Apologies if this is already here but I couldnt find it so I thought I would start it!

I thought it might be useful to start a list of all the films and music that help every body relax! I'll go first!

I realise I have stolen this form a previous post of mine but decided a dedicated thread would be good.

Hey All

Simple things by Zero Seven, just an amazing album. As for films, there is one film that is so relevant, but absolutely brilliant and that is Garden State, which also has a great soundtrack ( including Joe Gonzales ).
Interested to know if anyone is familiar with these, but try them if not.

I like to watch musicals when I need to relax or when I'm feeling unwell. "Hello, Dolly", "My Fair Lady", "The Producers", "Hairspray" etc. Also Disney movies... Helps me get my mind off things.

Favorite music for me is anything Ludwig van Beethoven. I am a Beethoven fanatic. Other times I love the calmer songs from the Smashing Pumpkins or listen t:o David Bowie.

Frightened Rabbit "Poke", "Learned your name"
Ryan Adams "Gimme Sunshine"
Ryan Adams "Words"
Ryan Adams "Call me on your way back home"
Ryan Adams "oh my sweet Carolina" (i live in his home state =)
Bon Iver "Skinny love" the later...with jools holand live version from 2008
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfAS6nwYc9g&feature=player_embedded
radiohead "fake plastic trees"
cat power "good woman" the acoustic one
the tallest man on earth "love is all"
missy higgins "forgive me"
rocky votolato "white daisy passing"
alanis morissette "that i would be good"

I listen to these over and over.

Movies for me:
Garden State
Lars and the Real Girl
fight club (strangely calms me down... i think because it is so familiar)

Also! During really stressful times like problems at work, family feuds or such, I like to lounge in bed all day and watch episodes of Dawson's Creek and Felicity. Makes me feel young again, and I can get lost in their lives and forget about mine for a while.

I watched the entire series of Lost in just six days about a year and a half ago during a dark time... There is a permanent body impression in three places on my bed where I've laid and not moved for so long so many times. That's kind of sad. But I don't do that anymore. =)

this is a nice thread:)
I agree with those who mentioned Jose Gonzalez in fact I'm now going to listen to his CD this morning now.
I find old familiar TV comedy is very comforting. Old episodes of Only Fools and Horses. Or Friends, seen them all a million times but the characters are so familiar and comforting that I find it calming. Also Everybody Loves Raymond and King of Queens. I love the American sit coms.

Pleased I started this now! Soom good stuff! Never consideded fight club but what a film, maybe I'll try it! And I dont think watching a whole season of lost is that sad. I once sat and watched all 3 extended edition lord of the rings films back to back. Thats about 13 hours worth. I took from 8 in the morning till 10 at night with breaks for relief and sustinance thrown in. That was a good day!

Hi there,

I get too restless to sit through a film and end up watching old repeats on obscure TV channels - I seem to have got engrossed in early 80s episodes of Dallas at the moment, which is a bit worrying.

When I'm feeling particularly bad, I listen to quite depressing music which, somehow, makes me feel better. Must be cathartic.

Dallas?? That isn't worrying - it's disturbing.

As for the music, I'm with you on that one. Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Joy Division, The Smiths - love them all. I find Cohen and Drake very relaxing while others would want to slash their wrists after listening to them...I guess it takes all sorts!

I love the film Paris, Texas for the soundtrack and the landscape, also the Graduate for The Simon And Garfunkel tunes...I also love John Barry's score in Midnight Cowboy, which is also a great film.

As far as comedy goes, I always come back to Laurel And Hardy, who I have loved since childhood. I find them comforting and always brilliantly funny.

I also like to watch anything connected with the second world war...this concerns me a little as to why I find it so fascinating. I think it's the fact that I complain about my often petty anxieties when I know there are others who have experienced suffering on an unimaginable scale...and I'm sitting there watching it all unfold from the comfort of my bed, drinking tea and eating toast. I feel safe and so lucky not to have lived through that.

I know I'm a bit odd but that's just me and I guess that's why I'm here:D.

Robin,

Have you been sneaking a look at my music collection - the Smiths, Leonard Cohen? Love it!

I was thinking of asking Nicola to add a new forum for those with the same Dallas problem as me - Pre-nineties Iffy Soap-opera Syndrome (PISS). I'll see if the problem persists and think about it.

PISS Excellent!
I only ever "watched" Dallas/Dynasty etc when my younger sister had them on - I think she was obsessed with shoulder pads and big, blonde fluffy poodle hairdoes!

I would just sit here in the corner with my headphones on, listening to miserable music...something's never change!

I'm not suffering from PISS but last week I started to develop an unhealthy fascination with the Indian Doctor its on daytime TV on BBC 3 or some crap and features that bloke from the Kumars at number 42. Utter nonsense it was!!

I don't feel too bad now about my Dallas distraction fascination (which may have spread to Dynasty over the weekend - I'll go for the hat trick this weekend and see if I can find Falcon Crest).

Whatever it takes to distract us, I suppose.

I saw some of that doctor programme - oh dear...
