Hi all

I hope you're all OK...

I recently received a letter from the NHS to say that I've been put on a waiting list for CBT although the current wait is in the region of 10 months!

Have made some enquiries about private counsellors and one has replied saying that he can offer hourly sessions of CBT and other techniques at £40 a time, and that up to 16 sessions should be required.

Does this sound about right? I'd be interested to hear from anybody else who has had experience of seeking private treatment.

Many thanks

Chris... who you might see selling the Big Issue to fund his treatment!!

Here in Surrey I am paying £40 to see a psychotherapist, but I think counsellors charge about the same too. My charge was fixed 18 months ago.

By joining the National Phobics Society, you may be able to get a discount on your sessions. See this link http://www.phobics-society.org.uk/treatmenthelp.shtml

I am receiving counselling through a charitable counselling organization having found the NHS CBT unhelpful for my particular problems.

The counselling is open ended, meaning that I will be seen by a counsellor for as long as I need to. I see him once a week for a 50 minute session and I am finding it really good to have someone to offload on. The visits are in my own home and I found out about it from my local library. The cost? It's FREE!!

I've just got to the point where I am going to look into some form of counselling, probably CBT, as I'm getting married next year and I want this gone for then, but I had no idea how long it took to get a referral on the NHS :( Where can I even begin to look for going private? (even if I have to pay through the nose for it!) Preferably on the Internet, as I'm housebound today waiting to give British Gas a going over for incompetence :)

Thanks for the advice Ray, I will make some enquiries. Thanks also to Kate, I like the word FREE!!!

Leah I would check with your GP before going down the private route, I think the waiting list varies between NHS areas, mine is just not very good!!!

As for finding a counsellor I just looked in the Thomson Directory and Yellow Pages.

Take care

Chris

Try here

You'll need to look under 'Counsellor', 'Psychologist/CBT THerapist' and 'psychotherapist' maybe.
