Hello people. Been on 20mg Omeprazole for a week now. They work well so long as I take them at the right time, which I havent been.

I was trying to take them at 5pm so they would be most effective during the night when i get the reflux, forgetting that I only need to take them to cover periods where I eat because they are to prevent symptoms and not to treat them. I dont eat while im sleeping so Im wasting the tablets essentially.

Ive decided I need to get them from 5pm in the late afternoon, back to about 11am, before lunch (i dont eat breakfast often). To do this I have three choices. I can either take my tablet an hour earlier every day for so many days to get it back on track, a bit at a time, which means days of going less than 24 hours between pills/ Im not supposed to take them with less than a 24 hour gap. Or I could not take one when I normally would this evening and wait it out til tomorrow morning and start taking them at the right time of day again. But this would mean a hard night tonight with my reflux returning. Or lastly I could just take one now, about 4 hours earlier than usualy, and getting it back to the right time by doing the same tomorrow, but this would mean leaving a gap of only about 20 hours between tablets.

I have medication phobia, so I dont know what to do. I get scared of taking too much too soon.

Are there any Omeprazole takers there than can give their opinion? I cant call my doc, by the time he'd call me back, I will have missed any opportunity to take a tablet before 5pm if i should decide to do so.

Any advice appreciated.

i take it, but not regularly, only when i have flare ups.. i take 40g a day. I take one 20g always one in the morning and 20g before my dinner, and that helps me... but like i say only when im having a flare up.
My mother suffers reflux in the night where she will wake up choking on acid but she takes 20g every day before her dinner that works for her :)

if you take two a day then i should be fine taking one a day with less than a 24 hour gap I presume, seeing as you take them twice during daytime. Can anyone else back me up with comments if they do the same? I really want to take one now instead of waiting three more hours until the usual time when they dont really work

One a day lasts for me, 20mg. I take it after my breakfast.
It's trial and error

My GI specialist said they only last for about 8 hours. Don't know if that is of any help.

Hi - My GP told me to take it just before I go to bed? It works for me.

one thing you must do wth lansoprazol (same type of meds) so presume its the same is to take them on a empty stomach and not to eat for 30 - 45 mnutes or they don,t work aswell .

You can actually take Omeprazole before or after food. I was on lansoprazole as well for a wee while Mel. I'm on esomprazole now and I take it after breakfast.

Haz. :)
