What's a breast nodule?

Went - finally - to see the GP yesterday about some general lumpiness in my left boob. She checked, and said there was a nodule in the right one, and some more in the left one, that it was harmless and moveable and she didn't think there was anything to worry about, just to examine my breasts each month etc. I'm slightly shocked that I could have a lump in the right one without ever knowing (I examine them monthly.. albeit apparently not correctly) and surprised that despite her saying I do habe lumps, she's not reffering me? Can they tell a benign one just by examination? I'm twenty one with pretty much zero family history of breast cancer (as far as I know - my dad was adopted at birth, and there's been a lot of divorces) if that helps..

I had a similar thing at age 21 funnily enough, three years into my degree. It was a tiny little moveable firm lump. They called it a breast mouse (yes, really) and did nothing about it. In the end it went away on its own.
