Hi

Thought I would introduce myself to see if anyone can help me and hopefully I can help someone else.

I have suffered from a fear of being sick since I was 8, that is now 20 years. When I was young I did not want to go to school in case I was sick. I hated assemblies cause I felt claustrophobic. I also hated school in case I was ill when away. But luckily I was not bad with panic attacks. I managed to cope through school only worring when I knew a bug was going round.

It got worse when I was 17, my mum and dad split up - don't know if that is relevant - I stopped going to school as much as I could but managed to pass some A levels. Then was the bad time of my life for 2 years I was house bound was anxious all the time has at least 3 panic attacks a day then I was put on seroxat and I have managed to live a relatively normal life. I often have bad phases but would like to get better and get off the pills.

I will not eat out incase I am ill, I do not drink alcohol, I have not been on a plane for 4 years as I had a panic attack on one but would really like to travel. Have tried hypnotherapy, counselling and a shrink on the NHS. Have not tried CBT but looks like it could be worth a go. Am having a bad time at the moment so need to do something!!!

Hope this was not too long but 20 years worth of fear does take a long time.

Keep your chin up!!!;)

I can so relate to this.
I have had it since i was about 5 and havent been sick since i was 8! I am 25 now. At school i was the same, Didnt like assemblies as would panic, used to sit in the sick bay at lunch and get the nurse to call my Mum. But like you I managed.

This year has got real bad for me, after getting a bug (i wasnt sick, god knows how i wasnt) but since then i have had massive panic attacks and health anxiety.

I AM on the mend. I have had hypnotherapy and just recently i have finished councelling. I still get nervous when eating out and i run a mile if i hear of any germies going about.

But life is easier and I can socialise and can you believe it i do drink!

Things do get easier, but i think i will always suffer with this stupid fear!
