My name is Jean, I'm from Garner, North Carolina. I have a problem and would like to see if anyone can help me determine what it's coming from. Let me start by saying I love to sing. I sing quite often in church doing solo's. I can get through the first verse fine but toward then ending of the song, I start to hyperventulate and have to stop completely to try to get a breath. It's like my air just leaves me and if I didn't stop at that moment, I wouldn't be able to say a word at all because I don't have the breath to do so. Can someone out there heop me or at least let me know that I'm not the only person with this problem. Thanks, cjpenny1

Hello Jean, and welcome.

I wonder if you are getting nervous and the hyperventialtion is kicking in after a couple of minutes? Or maybe the situation is a reminder of another time?

My advice would be to practice exposing yourself to this singing and see if you can overcome it. But also practice the breathing technique at least twice a day and this should help you overcome this difficulty whetrever you may be.

Hi Jean and welcome to the froum. You are definitely not alone. I also sing but I get too nervous at times to sing solos, I'm OK if I just 'do it' without the anticipation but if I know it going to happen then i get very worked up and my breathing goes and i get a lump in my throat that inhibits performance. Sounds to me like nerves are kicking in. Have you had singing lessons or voice coaching as that will teach you how to overcome things like this and strategies to use when you do ave problems.
