Hi there

I have never posted on a forum before so please be nice!

For the last year I have been suffering on and off with dizziness and headaches. I had blood tests, an MRI on my brain and was sent to an ear specialist. All my tests came back normal and it wasn't until I met with ENT that I was told this was anxiety. To be honest I still can not believe this now. I am definitely an anxious person so it does fit however can anyone shed some light on dizziness? I frequently get periods where I suddenly feel like I am on a boat and like I am about to faint. If I am speaking to someone standing up I suddenly feel like I need to grab on to them as I am about to pass out but I never do. The thing is, I can't link this always with anxiety as I am not anxious at the time. Is it normal to have these periods of dizziness even when I feel like I am not particularly anxious?

Thanks for listening and I hope someone can relate as I feel like I am losing the plot!

Hi and welcome, i get a lot of dizziness when not feeling particulary anxious, not the spinning sort, just woozy, like i've been standing on a boat.

Thanks for your replies. I think I knew deep down but it's so hard to believe. Good to know there are others out there like me!

Its down to tension in your ears and surrounding area, ears are delicate little things with even more delicate little nerve endings joining them to the rest of the body, when you get tense-anxious those little nerve endings become tense too and throw your balance off. The reason this happens when you arent even particularly anxious is that you may be quite relaxed but tension can linger, memory via your sub conscious mind can trigger sensations without any provocation whats so ever, the trick is to not add any more fear to it when the dizziness hits, easy said but with practice and patience the less you react to it, the less frequent it will appear, eventually if you stop fearing-caring about it, it will go away.

Also worth mentioning that many things through out the day can make people feel a bit off balance, from a bit of wax getting in the wrong place to hormones to blood pressure to dehydration- tiredness, hungry, getting up too quick, turning the head quickly, bad posture..so many.. people without anxiety get these as much as people with anxiety do, only they brush them off as quick as they come, anxious minds hold on to, and dissect every aspect, every possibility, they add a whole bunch of fear and turn what could have been just a one off into a daily event by over thinking and worrying it might happen again, which it will if you are constantly reminding yourself through fear. x

Thank you Mindful that was very helpful. I get these symptoms big time. Used to get many more symptoms too but I after accepting they were anxiety, I have let go and been able to greatly reduce them, but the head sensations seem to be so much harder to ignore! I'm getting better at realising when I am getting worked up and starting to control the feelings a bit more but it's very hard! I know it is anxiety as when I am truly distracted the dizzyness lessens or even after a couple of drinks it does too (it should be the other way around!!).

I definitely don't let it get in the way of what I want to do though and I would say to everyone that it feels like it is crippling your life, but you can't put your life on hold no matter how hard it seems, so do what you have to and have faith that you will be able to get the dizzyness under control in the future!

Thank you for your replies. They are really helpful. I find it so hard to not concentrate on the dizziness though. Even if I am busy at work it is always there and I find I focus on it a lot as it unnerves me and frustrates me so much. Does anyone have any tips on how to not to focus on it? I have found when I drink it goes which shows it must be if it goes when I truly relax- although I'm not sure I can keep a bottle of wine on me at all times!

I have it everyday. It's feels like your spacey and need to hold on to something.

Like you I an struggling to tell my self it's just anxiety. The same with feeling breathless too !!

Mine is the same too. Constant fuzzyness and light headedness and every now and then a kind of rush where it feels like I might faint.

Really hard to accept it as anxiety but it is.

Can't say I'm much good at distracting myself from the dizzyness or forgetting it. Seems like when I tell myself to ignore it that in itself is thinking about it and noticing it. Would really appreciate tips too!

Also does anyone find it is better at home? I guess again it is because you are more relaxed!!!

This is my biggest struggle right now! I definitely feel it's worse at work than when I'm at home, so I know it must be anxiety related.

Mindful's advice was really helpful. :)
