Hi, I joined a few weeks ago. I suffer with anxiety/panic attacks and agoraphobia. Basically over the past few weeks i am having terrible trouble swallowing food. I dread mealtimes. I cant eat in front of anyone because its just such an ordeal getting the food to go down. I am worrying myself stupid about this as ive never had this symptom as bad as it is at the moment. I am at my wits end thinking i have throat cancer. I chew and chew the food until when i do swallow i'm scared i'll choke!! This sounds so stupid. Anyone know how this feels please. Thanks Gilly123

I used to have this fear when i was really little. Thats how it all started for me. My Mum tells me that i used to chew my food but not swallow it, just spit it in the bin!

Touch wood, I havent suffered from it again, but to get round it, my Mum used to just let me eat what i wanted and when, which was usually fishfinger sandwiches and yoghurt. Nuts I know!

Anyway a very big welcome to you x

I've had a similar thing recently when I've got this pain in my throat. I got quite obsessed with the idea it was throat cancer until I realised it was to do with my doing a yoga asana incorrectly and straining it!

Hi Gilly.

I am 22 years old and suffering the exact same problem. and I mean EXACT. Thinking about swallowing the food causes the food to get stuck, then I get this mad adrenaline rush and cant breathe (Panic attack style symptoms) at which point I get it back up and calm myself down. I have not yet been unable to bring the food back up and I hope that doesnt happen. But I do have a sore throat which is swollen so I have no doubt that it is physical. Having said that there is always a sense of psychological damage here as just by 'thinking about swallowing' you are trying to Manually complete an Involuntary action. I have an appointment today to establish the cause and I will post on here later to update you if you haven't sorted it yet. Dont worry about cancer, I have been told that due to my age I am well outside the risk group and the risk group starts around 60. In the meantime do you suffer from really bad indigestion or heartburn? If so check out this link as is one of the most common causes of chocking on food is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastroesophageal_reflux_disease

That can be treated with capsules.

Hope that helps but most of all hope that you feel reassured. Am in the same boat on this one and it is pretty terrifying.

All the best
