No matter what causes hives, they need medication....sometimes they need a long course of antihistimes rather than a few weeks supply. The longer you have the hives, the more you worry about them and the more you worry about them, the longer they will stay.

Hi

Sounds like stress or an allergy to something. Antihistamines sound good for this.

Just having a bout now! Awful- worried it was a reaction to citalopram but been on them 2 years. Had starting easing off my 10mg dose and wondered if it was connected? The itching & soreness are worst I've ever had. Had some antihistamine yesterday but only had one so still suffering. How long do they take to work?

Susan, I call myself the ItchyOne for a reason. I used to have chronic hives (or urticaria). I've seen many doctors and specialists, and all they did was to prescribe me with more antihistamine.
Eventually I insisted to take a blood test to test my allergies. Turns out I was slightly allergic to shell fish. I then remembered that my first hive symptoms started a day after I had lots of shrimps for lunch.
I began to control my diet, and I suppose coupled with a mindset change, the hives gradually disappear after 6 months. That was 3 years ago, this year I started taking little doses of shell fish here and there to test my condition, and *touch wood* so far so good. :)
You're not alone, Susan. And you will get over it. :)
