Hi everyone. I live in SE London and am mum to a 17 yo with social anxiety and selective mutism - originating from severe bullying/teacher bullying aged just 7. Local services have been useless - endless waiting lists/locums not completing treatment/refusal to refer to specialist centres - the result: my son's condition has become extremely entrenched and he has become increasingly socially withdrawn/isolated. It is just the two of us, and I'm sure I don't have to explain to anyone here how difficult the last 10 years have been. Teen social groups are now impenetrable for my son and he cannot see how he will ever feel "normal" again or be able to make friends. He spends all his time alone in his room and it totally breaks my heart. I used to be able to help and support him with CBT techniques etc, but now he is older he doesn't want his mum hanging around - but pardoxically relies on me 100% to communicate for him because of the selective mutism.

I hope I will pick up some useful advice and much needed support here.

What does he do? Is he at college or anything? A starting point would be finding some volunteer groups to do some work, they are usually very nice people used to dealing with people who may have had some problems. There is also no pressure, you can come and go as you please, but it does give you confidence and helps meet people.

Good luck
