I appear to be getting over my lymphoma worry (thank goodness!) but my skin cancer worry is back with a vengeance!
I have got a large (2cm) mole on my scalp which obviously I cannot really monitor myself due to it being under my hair, and I have been really freaked out by it all my life. As far as I can tell it has never really changed, it has always had a white centre (the white bit is about 1cm so also quite large) so it is definitely atypical. It causes me to feel uncomfortable when anyone touches my head or hair, even my boyfriend, and taking me to a hairdressers is like taking a dog to the vets, I am petrified, I literally sit with my shoulders hunched right up my ears and my teeth clenched for the entire time.
My phobia about my mole means that I am scared to have anyone move my hair to look at it as I imagine pain even though there is no pain.

I recently managed to pluck up the courage to speak to my gp about it, and he was excellent, managed to look at my mole without touching it and offered me a referral to a dermatologist, even though he "was not worried and would not get it removed if it was on him unless it became worrisome".
The process in my area for dermatologist referrals is that you get a photograph taken by a medical illustrator, who forwards your details to a dermatologist to prioritise your appointment.
I had my appointment on the 3rd of September to get my images taken, and I am still waiting to hear about my appointment. I called up to track it and they said the dermatologist has seen the images and marked it as non urgent and I should hear within 12 weeks.

My question is this- has anyone been to see a dermatologist about a mole? Has anyone had q mole removed? What happens next? And is the fact that it is marked non urgent a good indicator that I should stop worrying?

Id say the fact it's been marked non urgent is a good thing the specialist obviously doesn't think it's cancer, if they saw the images and wanted to see you immediately then you should worry. Although I totally understand that 12 weeks can be a long time to wait when worrying about something (I had the same thing with my knee after a football injury, 6 weeks waiting list to see a specialist)

I agree non urgent sounds like good news to me. :hugs:

Thanks guys! I am having an argument in my head as to get it removed or to keep it, I know that if it is ok there is no need to get it removed, but considering how much anxiety it causes me I sort of think it might be best just to get rid of it, but then again I think the scar from removal will probably scare me just as much! So confused!

I had images taken of a mole about 20 years...they are still in my file but since it hasn't changed they have not done anything about it. They just kept the images to compare if it does change but it doesn't worry me now since they didn't seem too concerned. I have had other harmless moles removed at the cryo clinic..they just sprayed them with a freeze spray and then they dropped off a few days later.

I got an image taken of this mole when I was about 8 or 9, the dermatologist was not worried about it back then but offered a biopsy to check, my mum opted to leave it for 3 months for monitoring as she had not noticed any changes in it, so maybe the dermatologist has compared it to that picture and that is why it is non urgent?
actually, I have just googled it and think it may be a seborrhoeic wart rather than a mole ... The dermatologist always refers to it as a "lesion" so I guess it may not even be a mole?
I really should phone my gp but I am trying to avoid it if at all possible as it is fuelling my anxiety in the long run!
