for a while i have noticed i dont get morning erections anymore. at first i thought it was just stress but the longer it has gone the more worried i have become. Also recently i have noticed its becoming increasingly difficulty getting and maintaining an erection whether that would be masterbation or watching porn, obviously im unable to ejaculate as well,Nothing seems to work and now im convinced i have erectile dsyfunction or could it be anxiety,im currently taking propranolol & citalopram.
(ps) ive only been on the above meds since feb this year, but have had problems before that but they are getting worse,i do tend to go to the toilet more at night than in the day,and have really dry mouth at night too.
i did do counseling about 4 yrs ago re:been unable to ejaculate whilst with a partner but they wasnt telling me anything i didnt already know! and never went again.i have made an appointment to see a male doctor next week, but im rubbish with words so will probably write it down so i dont bottle it and make a fool of my self, but any help would be great.:blush::blush:

You obviously support the wrong football team :D seriously so many anti depressants have that effect plus the more you concentrate on it the worse it will become. I am sure it is only a temporary thing, I wouldn't worry too much.

Dr told me its possible it could be the side affects from propranolol. So has suggested I reduce them from two, three times a day,to one three times a day.(10mg) But have had a blood test so will see if there's any other problems in a weeks time.
Is it not wise to just stop propranolol all together to see if it is that what's causing the problems? Or follow drs advice ?

My boyfriend is on propanolol (he doesn't have this problem btw) but I just wanted to say that he has been advised by his gp to go back and get his dose reduced rather than just dropping it all together.

I was on venlafaxine for a while and noticed a definite change in sexual function. In fact there was no response at all. It came back when I stopped it. (But I am a lady and can fake it)

Im just going to reduce the dose for now and see what happens, plus wait on blood tests,i did think it would be citalopram that would have caused problems, but dr said it was deffo propranalol. ps im supporting the other team! get me drift ;-)
(thanks for the above comments)

I am no doctor but I take propranol and that shouldn't effect your situation and I am surprised your doctor said it was definitely propranol. i would think it could be a mixture of the two drugs you are taking as many anti depressants have this effect on men. i assume you are quite young so I would go back to your doctor and talk it through again.best of luck.

i thought that too but then who am i to argue with a doctor, plus i think ive done too much research and got my self into a state over it,plus yesterday and this morning something pointed north and hadnt happened for ages,so im even more confused.

Meds have messed up my sexual functioning - I'm only on 5mg of prozac daily but both my libido and erection quality are reduced - I also rarely get 'morning wood' any more.

The annoying thing is is that I was taking 20mg just over a year ago and had no sexual side effects at all...I really don't know whats happened this time!

How did people here manage their SSRI sexual dysfunction? Any success getting additional medication from the GP to augment the SSRIs? I don't want to give up the fluoxetine as its definitely helped my intrusive thoughts/depression/anxiety.

I think i might have done something a bit stupid, because the dr kind of scared me a bit re-propranalol side affects, ive stopped taking them all together,so got home from dr's and flushed them all down the toilet, but still taking the citaloptram, even tho they have the simular side affects errection/ejaculation problems,so as you can tell im very confused about it all,i feel a bit rubbish with not taking the propranalol.

I take 20mg Citalopram and it effects my sexual performance a fair bit, my erections are not as hard as they used to be and can go limp very quick for no reason its quit irritating but i feel i need the medication.

What can i do? :/

If you find a solution I'd love to hear it! I heard taking zinc can help increase dopamine therefore leading to stronger erections and libido, though it hasn't worked for me so far...

i was lead to believe zinc only helped you to produce more of the:blush: white stuff.
ps i used to take it yrs back and did nothing for me.

Hi, I was once told by a psychiatrist that he prescribed buspar to counteract erectile dysfunction caused by ssris. I am not certain that I remember it correctly, though.

I realise I'm a month late to this thread, but if you're still around...

I've been on propranolol before, also tried atenolol, both beta-blockers.

Slowed my heart-rate nicely, there were no sexual side effects.

Citalopram however...I certainly had sexual side effects. I had to take a Viagra, and even then I was numb (down there) couldn't feel any pleasurable sensations. It was horrible, came off that fast (no pun intended :))

The effect is called "genital anaesthesia" I believe, highly unpleasant

The docs in the UK don't seem to prescribe any augmentation to SSRIs to deal with sexual side effects. I asked my GP and he pretty much said the best he could do was give me a private prescription for viagra or something similar. The prices are ridiculous though so I made the decision to take no more prozac and see what happened to my body in the next few weeks before going down that route.

It seems that I have to choose between good mental health and normal sexual function...why does it have to be one or the other? :(

I'm also On citalopram, I don't have any issues with getting or maintaining an erection, it's more the ejaculation side of things, before the meds I would ejaculate every time
I had sex / masturbated, now it's probably just over half the time & my sex drive has gone down quite a bit, which is fine for now as the misses is pregnant and is always tired, she has her excuse so saves me making one haha

My GP gives me a private prescription. For 100mg tabs, which I cut in half with a pill splitter. Cheapest cost for 4 100mg tabs, £23.50 from Superdrug, in my experience.

Mirtazapine and Pregabalin have less chance of causing sexual side effects. The Mirt does cause problems for me, but didn't for the first few years, but I've been on it a while now. Only been taking Viagra for the past 2 years.

hello, mark, just picked this up not been on for a few weeks,i got the all clear from my blood tests, but have been taking the propranolol 1 tab 3 times a day,not convinced it was the propranolol, as I woke up with the morning wood (blush) but I hadn't decreased the meds then, and shall we say I went a bit mad with different partners (one nighters) is the easiest way to put it lol,and everthing went to plan apart from one were I didn't ejaculate, still taking the same dosage of citalopram 30 mg/day, ps the dr did suggest the private prescription for Viagra I refused,if need be I can get them off the net cheaper.:)

I would never get anything off the web without a prescription, you never know what the quality control is like.

I had exactly the same problem on Citalopram. It was good at first but then ...

Ah,, I started Prozac/Fluoxetine... I'm a bit worried about this. I just broke up in a long distance relationship. So it's hard for me to tell if it's effecting yet, but I'm worried if it will. Only on day 30.. If I have a problem, I think screw it. I know a bunch of guys my age, that take Viagra kinda of drugs, just to keep up to peak performance. I would never do that if I didn't have to, but in this kind of situation, where it wasn't really my fault... If there was any problems, once I started having sex, I'd just go straight to the next doctor for a prescription. I've heard from older guys, with connections to doctors, there are better, longer lasting versions. Anyway, I think i'm still okay, occasionally morning glory.. But, I don't want it less. mighty hehe... Girls act differently if you are less hmm hard sometimes. Not the kind of first impression I'd like to make.

Medication does play havoc with either sex :( When I was on Clomipramine I couldn't climax at all, on Citalopram my sex drive just switched off, and on Mirt my sex drive recovered a bit bit I still preferred playing Sudoku to sex.

I've been off Mirt for a while and things have not totally recovered. The GP suggested a private prescription for Viagra which seems to be the norm these days. It's great being 18 again with a woody that lasts 4 hours, but it's not really natural or spontaneous and you still have the issues at the back of your mind. Personally I preferred a service dose of Cialis (2.5mg a day, or 5 mg every other day) which has virtually no side effects and gave a gentle nudge in the right direction.

However for a few months I have been trying natural things with good success. Examples include male pelvic floor exercises (very effective), pilates (gets core strength up), much better diet (loads of fruit and veg) and walking - that's great exercise for down there and gets you off the sofa. Lots of hard work but it does seem to work, I'm almost back to full power with no blue pills in sight. I know it's easier to just pop a pill, but I always think that's ignoring what your body is telling you - that things are not quite right.

I do find the price of private prescriptions so irritating - they have you over a barrel - no wonder people buy generic versions from India and goodness knows what's in them.

Anyway don't give up hope anyone reading this and suffering too. Most issues clear up once your off the medication, and the doctor can give you pills for a quick fix.
