Hi, my name is Joseph and I am new to the site. First impressions are excellent. My main personal symptoms are GAD and chronic depersonalisation (dp/dr). Any tips for dealing with this disabling disorder (dp/dr) would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers Ray,

this has helped me already knowing I am not alone. Thought I was going insane, with even my G.P. giving me odd looks when I tried to describe how it felt to suffer dp/dr. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy but perversely it does help knowing that I am not the only one suffering in this way and also that you can recover in time. Many thanks again.

Hi Joseph,
I, too, suffer from this (as Im sure many many others do) and have been getting progressively worse lately - like I'm gradually moving further and further away from 'normal life'. One way I've dealt with it is to drink alcohol- sounds crazy but it does make me feel more 'grounded' (not getting 'drunk' you understand, just calming my nerves with one or two!).
HOWEVER, the only reason I THINK that works is because of the relaxant effect of alcohol.... drinking, in both my personal experience and what I've seen happen to others with anxiety problems, only exacerbates the problem long-term. I believe I am right in saying that alcohol consumption has been proven to worsen panic (and other psychological) symptoms.
What I am trying to say is that I believe the key to unlocking the box you're inside is to learn to RELAX (but not by using alcohol). The problem is, for most of us, we CAN'T. We must only think, for now, that one day we WILL be able to, but it will take time...

I hope that by realising you are not alone will help start you on the path to recovery and you will soon be feeling 'yourself' again.

I hope my post made sense and came across correctly if not ask me what the hell I'm talking about! x

Take care, Joseph:)
