I didn't think much of it before but now it's concerning me a little. On my middle finger I have 3 thin dark brown/black vertical lines and a very tiny one that is barely noticeable. The other lines are also small but still noticeable. They sort of look like splinters under the nail or something. This is on at least 3 of my fingernails at the moment and I'm just wondering what they may be?

Stupid me searched a little online about it and come up with all sort of things like heart disease and stuff which has worried me...

Thanks.

I always get something like this on one finger. I've had it on and off for years and it's never caused any problems. As to what it is, I can't help I'm afraid.

Hi, I get them and have been and googled them and wish I never did and that was last year.

So here goes splinter hemorrhages ie:small brown streaks under the nail.

What can cause the besides from the major stuff which if you had the main one you would be very ill before you had noticed the splinter hemorrhages (I will not name the disease) but you would have a fever with a temperature in the around 110 so foget that.

1, A knock on the nail bed ie: a hammer or something like that
2, Your computer keyboard. Yes tapping them bloody keys can cause them
3, If you are a lady having your nails done to often can also cause them
4, Grasping you hand in a fist to hard that can cause them

Andthe list goes on for simple everyday things that can cause them the slightest trauma to the nail bed and thats it. They mainly go unnoticed because you dont think of looking at your nails all that often.
But now that you have then you take more notice their fore you see more.

Thanks for the replies. :)

Damn, I'm using the keyboard A LOT so I guess that explains this then! But yeah, I do agree. I thought if it was something serious, like heart disease, I will be getting more symptoms than just this obviously. Haha, I have health anxiety so whatever symptoms I get I think the worst.

I hear you on that mate health anxiety is a bugger.
But you mentioned it so i will say it endocarditis . Is a strange disease and the best way to stay away from it is Good dental hygiene as simple as that, But it is avery rare disease.

And how come you mentioned that the lines are small and on one finger some kind of nail bed trauma is the most probable cause.

Like I said have been there and do that one even had the esr blood test. So have spent alot of time looking online about this topic.

You may notice that once the lines have grow out you will most lightly get them again in the same finger in the future, I dont know way but whatever trauma caused it in the first place must cause a small weakness that lasts awhile.

Take care mate and if you need to ask anything fire away if I can help I will try.

hi guys I know its an old post but I have been having small barely visible lines in my nails for a while now but last week I developed a line up the middle of my thumb this has made me beyond anxious and have also developed a small splinter like mark under my little finger!, I am so scared I have googled this week and the results were the worst possible result which has undoubtedly made me even more anxious thankfully I have a doctors appointment today but im completely terrified of what she is gonna say!, but on the up side thank goodness for this site wish I had thought about looking on here instead of googling

I'm bringing this thread back up as with my recent heart worries I've read the link between this. I have a few of these that keep popping up. They're only tiny and I e been getting then for some time.
Can they ever be normal as I don't fit any of those 'normal' criteria above :(

A little over a year ago I noticed a black line very small at the end of my right pinky nail it looked just like a splinter of wood that was imbedded under the nail..I couldn't recall any splinter getting under my nail and it would not wash off no matter what so I began to wonder ..so I turned to google and the mayo clinic and found this could be a Splinter hemmorrage which can caused by a number of horrible things as we all know ...anyhow I then began scanning my nails and found a couple more small ones on different fingers and ended up in the Emergency room in a panic. They did regular blood tests and checked my heart function EKG and the Heart attack blood work up . and sent me home this was not good enough for me so I seen my regular Dr who said he was not worried about these things that were appearing on every nail even toenails now. I pressed harder and got him to send me to a dermatologist for evaluation ...I seen the dermatologist and immediately he said yes you are correct these are splinter Hemmorages and sent me for a barrage of tests ...Heart Echocardiogram Blood Cultures ANA Urine tests Trichinosis and CBC and many more ...ALL tests came back perfectly normal . I was not satisfied I wanted answers .. I ran from emergency room to emergency room day after day thinking I had Endocarditis or blood cancer or lupus or Hughes or some kind of auto immune disease ...everytime I went in they would do blood work look at my nails do chest x rays and say I was fine ...I changed doctors and got the new one to run all kinds of tests on me all came back normal ...
But I was still getting them on my fingernails and toenails ..still do ..I have a total of 7 right now ...they tried to say trauma ...but I rested my hands didn't use them for anything strenuous at ALL for a week and still new ones came on my toes too...anyways ...I have had every single test you could ever have for these and seen over 20 different drs and everyone of them said nothing is wrong ...seen another dermatologist nothing wrong ..seen a neurologist nothing wrong ...seen a hematologist nothing wrong..

So allllllllll the crap on the internet that says OH MY GOD YOUR GOING TO DIE IF YOU HAVE SPLINTER HEMMORAGES IS COMPLETE GARBAGE ...I am living proof that you can develop them for NO SERIOUS REASON AT ALL

Thank you so much for your sharing, I really appreciate what you have shared. I just want to ask you if your black lines are vertical and run from the base to the tip of the nail. I have 2 of them on my thumb, ones is dark brown and the other is very fade. I can see them grow over the past 3 years.

I know this is an old post but I am FREAKING OUT right now!
I have been noticing small black splinter looking lines popping up since the start of the year. Today though I noticed that when I push down on my nails I can see tiny little ones on pretty much all of my nails!

I googled it and am freaking out so bad. I have made a doctors appointment for tomorrow but I dont know that I can wait :(
