hello
my name is richard and i have had panic attacks and anxiety for many years. i also get ectopic heart beats, flipflops etc as described by some of you. i take tablets for blood pressure. at the moment im concerned because i need to see a dentist but cant pluck up the courage as im frightened of my reactions bodily and mentally. its good to be able to explain things to people who understand although i dont like to appear selffish as i know many of you are suffering from your own problems[:D

Hello Richard
I dont think i can give you any advice as everyone is different, but i wanted to let you know that i had (have) an extreme phobia of dentists.
Ive suffered panic and anxiety for 20 years since i was 15, and really bad ectopic beats.
The thought of going to a dentist was enough to start me shaking violently, i didnt go for years, my teeth were so bad i was ashamed, always covered my mouth when i laughed.

Anyway, in the last couple of years ive had 6 crowns, numerous fillings, and 3 teeth out, one just a couple of days ago. It did help that i ve found the best dentist ever!!, he is so understanding. Wheni had to go the other day i had a panic attack in the waiting room, was terrified i would have one while in the midst of having my tooth out, could see myself rushing out the room dripping blood everywhere! But i didnt, imagination is always worse for me than the actual reality.
I believe i am the wimpiest person ever! i doubt this helped, just wanted you to know that i know exactly how you feel.
i did deep breathing in the dentist chair and clutched my car keys tightly!
I did it, but the toothache wa so unbearable i would have gone through anything to get rid off it!!
Good luck to you
Julie

Hi Richard

A warm welcome to the forum.

I'm the same as you where dentists are concerned and I must say I'm not as lucky as Julie is in having a good dentist.

Take care

Hi Richard,
I also suffer with panic attacks and anxiety, like you for many years. I also get these eptopic heart beats and palpatations, and are a constant worry for me. I am new to this site, and find it a real comfort. You are not suffering alone, hope you find it as useful as I do.

Welcome to the forum, Richard.

I too am scared of dentists and hadn't been for 2 years until last week when I forced to go because of an abcess on my gum. And that was probably caused by all the anxiety and stress. Ironic, isn't it?

My advice is to go, and explain to your dentist how you feel and suffer. It will not be as bad as you think.

Take Care,

Ray

Hi Richard, I too suffer from anxiety especially dentists doctors any situation Iam not fully in control of, but saying that when push comes to shove you should try doing it, I had to go to the doctors a few weeks ago concerning lets say a male issue enough said, and its suprising when you take choice out of the equation and replace it with necsasity what you can do, fortunately when I got to the doctors I had a load of change of address forms which kept my head busy for the initial 5 mins which helped alot, saying that I need to see a dentist at the minute and darent go so its down to how you fee,l try booking the dentist and getting there If you panic just walk kout of the dentist, I have done it many of time at the doctors sitting there waiting for my name to come up sends me crazy so I just walk out and call them and say sorry something come up can I re book. at the end of the day the way I see it is so what if your gonna bugger somebodys schedule up then so be it my peace of mind and sanity half the time is much more important. good luck anyway mate

Hi richard I know it is easier to say this than do it' you should try to get to the dentist if at all possible I avoided the dentist like the plague until several years ago when severe mouth infections meant I had to go and had to loose 8 teeth in one go .Try and look at it as part of your road to recovery if you can face this fear succesfully you will feel much more confident . Perhaps taking a close freind to the dentists with you for moral support will help. Good luck Melvyn.

Hi Richard ... I am new here too.... I am also scared of going as I know my heart rate will be unreal! heart will start flopping in hest.. I will need air and cool water on face ..... But the thought of it all is usualy worse than when you are there. I went not long ago and was terrified sat in the waiting room with rescue remedey and lavender with my 14 yr old calming me down. .... you can imagine the sight! But i was fine ... not one flutter ! But it would take severe pain for me to go again so I understand.
