hi everyone just need to ask for some advice....posted this earlier on an earlier thread but so far no replies....anyhow had a smear test done 5 weeks ago and phoned docs yday to ask how long results take...she said a couple of weeks and if ive not heard anything, usually everything is ok.....anyhow that not being good enough, i phoned cytology dept at hospital...she said there was a backlog and had only just got on to doing the smears done in the week of 14 july...
my question is, does this mean smears are sat waiting to be analysed for weeks...or that there is a backlog of results to be sent out?
sorry for waffling but im worried now, has it cant be good to have the smears sat waiting...
am i being silly, is it just a backlog of paper work not smears?
what does everyone think??
thanx for reading

ive never had a smear, but im guessing a backlog is just that, a backlog! weather its just the tests themselves or sending the results!
try not toworry, im sure everything is fine!

Could be a backlog of either but as the smear is preserved in a sterile container with special fluid it will not alter the state of the sample or in anyway affect the result.
Hope this helps

Mine used to take about 2 months to come through so that is not unusual

Forgot to say that if there was a problem they would contact you immediately - trust me as they did me.

It will be the paperwork delay sending out the usual "you are fine" letters that is taking the time.

Not really scientifically, just used to be a nurse but in a way I am probably classed as retired now as I gave up when I had the children. Hope all the replies have made you feel better chuck

Hi there

I had one done at the end of April - and I was told 6-8 weeks by the nurse. I was desperate for the results 'cos it was the most painful smear ever and I convinced myself that there was something wrong!

I kept ringing and ringing my surgery who told me that there was a delay and they were all taking about 11-12 weeks. After about 13 weeks I received my "normal" letter.

I know what its like waiting - not nice, but I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. We are not the most patient of people are we!??

Take care
