Hi all,

Ive suffered from Emetaphobia for as long as I can remember and only recently after an international move has it really started to effect my life. I have started to avoid going into public situations as I cannot remove this irrational fear from my mind that I may vomit in public. Although the general fear of vomiting is there, my biggest concern is becoming ill in a public situation, such as a store, dentists office or similar. In addition a claustrophobic situation also sets off my anxiety about vomiting. Having visited this site on and off for a few months now I am really keen to hear from others who may suffer the same issues. I have just started Cognitive Behavioural Therapy but am still a little sceptical as one of the main parts of this therapy is exposure to the issue, and as Im sure you all know there is no way im going to stand next to someone vomiting or make myself ill.

I sometimes feel very alone with this condition, although my wife and friends try hard no on undertsands unless they suffer from it. I really hope to hear from others who can perhaps offer guidance and reassurance that things will get easier over time and life may start to return to normal.

Hi,

My name is Alicja and I saw your message on the Forum this evening, and just wanted to let you know that I too suffer with a horrible fear of being sick. I have had this year for around 20 years now, and it is getting to really over take my life of late. I have recently married and obviously Children are next on the card, but I don't want to have to go through maternity with the worry of "morning sickness". Babies being sick does not worry me at all, it is really me being sick. There are lots of topics on the site regarding Emetophobia, I haven;t been brave enough to look yet, but I am going to. I want to get over this. I suddenly feel so much better knowing that other people suffer with this fear. For years I have thought that I was a wimp, and people thought I was wierd because I couldn't deal with others vomiting around me, but now I realise that it is a big deal and that there is a name for this condition. I have felt so alone, and suddenly I now feel that I can speak to people who have this same fear. I really hope that you get the help and advice that you are looking for on this web site.

Take care for now Alicja

A Blair

Hi Steve
welcome to NMP, there are lovely people here all the time who can offer great advice on all sorts of things, so please don't feel alone.
I have had this phobia myself for 20 years, it is horrible, as you say some don't understand, it's not even that they don't it's more that they can't because they do not have the phobia, or other phobias themselves.
I have tried lots of things over the years some have been more succesfull than others, i have now come to understand that it is only me that can stop these thoughts, days are much easier now than they were, i do still have some right bad days where nothing helps, but i get through them and you will too, time will help because you will see that people are not sick as often as you imagine they are. when you are afraid of something it dominates your life as you well know, but think of the people who have dreadful fears of snakes, thunder, almost anything you don't fear and you will see, i dont fear snakes therefor i don't think about them, thunder doesn't frighten me again never enters my thoughts, you see fear is the only thing making you feel this way.
I know in time things will get better for you, tell yourself that everyday.
Wish you all the best, if you ever want to talk, mail me or PM me i'll always be around

Sharon :)

Hi, I am a newey too, who also suffers like you and have done for the past 35 years since I was 7. Sometimes it has been absoultely a nightmare and then others I seem to just get on with it. Haven't been able to look after the kids when they have been ill, which hasn,t been very often, because I watch everthing they eat.

We can all help each other with this and give support.

Speak to you soon
