I went out in my car earlier for the first real time since passing my test. As I was very nwevous anyway i wasnt paying a lot of attention to my speed, bad I know but i knew I wasnt a danger.
I was approaching a speed camera and only realised at the last minute that i was doing about 34mph in a 30 zone. Is this going to constitute a fine and points on my license? That's the last thing I need in my first week of driving.
My dad says the speedometer always reads a few lower I.e. if i was doing 34 I was really only doing 32. In that case would I be safe?
This is going to play on my mind all day.
I didn't see the flash but then again would I in daylight? And wasnt looking intently in my mirror.

They usually allow 10% over.

Thanks annie! So what would 10% over be? Also would I have seen it flash? X

That would be 33 so you may get away with it. It is hard to tell if you would have seen it flash. If you have been caught you will know within 2 weeks.

On some websites it says 10% + 2 so I should be ok in that case.
I think it was between 33 and 34 which if the speedometer is set lower means it was only 31/32 in real life.
Im giving myself a headache. If i get more than 6 points i get my license taken. away and have to re apply. This is so upsetting considering how long i have tried for this

They allow the 10% to make allowances for speedometer differences. You wouldn't get 6 points for being over by 1 mph. You would more likely be asked to go on a speed awareness course and would not lose points. Sometimes they give you the option of a course or points. My step son is a traffic police officer and he advises the course but hopefully you will be fine anyway. Don't worry about it, you won't lose your licence over it.

I would rather go on the speed awareness course!

Yes that is the best option but hopefully you will get away with it this time. i will say to you the same as I would say to my own kids though...Watch your speed in future lol :) :hugs:

Don't worry about it! It will probably not even happen and even if it does you will be able to do a short speed awareness course. It really is not worth worrying about it..Enjoy your Christmas :) xx

You did so well passing your test this week and you may just be over reacting because you have just started driving, maybe it wasn't over that much anyway. Please don't let it worry you. My daughter in law got caught about a month ago doing about 37 in a 30 area. All she got was the awareness course so you have nothing to worry about xx

Ok thank you, is it standard that they send you on a speed awareness course these days?

For something minor that is not excessive speeding, yes it is. I checked with my step son when My daughter in law did it and he advised the speed awareness option (they usually give you a choice). That way you don't get points on your licence. You have to pay for the course but don't have to pay a fine. You may be worrying about nothing though as the chances are you won't hear anything x
