Hi guys,

Firstly I want to say I hope you are all struggling on and taking care of yourselves as best as you can; I am here if you would like someone to chat to.

I was 'officially' diagnosed with depression in July 2011 and have been on citalopram ever since. I also suffer from something that the medical industry just can't solve and that is alienation. I'm sure there are many people out there who are alienated but strive on, sometimes by distracting themselves with spectacles of entertainment for example which detracts attention from the deeper rooted problems. For me the deeper rooted problems are to be found in the way society is constructed, call it capitalism, call it what you like, all I know is that common human values have been made vacuous and moulded for some other agenda. Social relations have been marred yet our innate longing for meaningful, socially productive relationships strive on. I find it really hard to socialise in groups, I find the group dynamic deeply uncomfortable and it doesn't produce meaningful relationships. A problem I have is with what society accepts as 'normal'. You have to be funny all the time and crack banter, you can't be sad for too long or you're dull, you have to look a certain way to attract such and such a person, if you don't drink you're a loser, if you're a virgin it is not normal and you must be some sort of freak, if you have a mental illness people treat you differently etc. the list goes on. Social norms are destructive to the psyche and creates mundane, homogenous populations. I guess it's because people are scared not to be like the rest and part of something. It's a valid thing to be frightened of I guess. The pharmaceutical industry together with mainstream medicine pushes the argument that emotional distress is primarily genetically oriented, it is the biggest BS, it allows them to sell more mind-distorting drugs. The real problems are rooted in how society functions but they don't want you to know about that. I think genetics has a role in the propensity to get emotional distress but it is not THE reason.

I am still on anti-depressants yet I have re-lapsed in to suicidal thoughts due to my alienation/loneliness etc. Don't even want to consider coming off them yet, i've read the withdrawal effects are ridiculous even if weened off slowly. Just shows how much it distorts the biological processes of the mind. For me the first steps to having a saner society is to start understanding each other, a concerted effort for empathy and support without judgment or ridicule.

I hope all of you stay the course of life, I know it's almost so attractive to end it all sometimes but I have to believe that there is a better future. I stand with all those alienated who don't fit in. You aren't alone.

Take care of yourselves and feel free to chat if you want to :)

Welcome to the forums. I'm sure you'll find plenty of support here. I often feel isolated and that I don't fit in with others.
