I have suffered ovulation pain since a teenager am now 45yrs old and up till a few months ago the pain lasted 24-48 hrs. The pain is always on the right side lower abdomen and is like a knife shooting up to top of hip bone whenever I sit down, stand up, walk other than very gently or just before I urinate. I have had two hospital admissions for suspect appendix and ultrasound found nothing wrong. Last ultasound was three years ago.
Getting to that awkward ladies age and last two cycles have had severe ovulation pain lasting for days on end. Dr examined me and said def tender ovary but nothing can be done other than hormone treatment to stop ovulation and i don't want that.
Has anyone else had ovualtion pain lasting more than three days. I can have it up to 10 days.
Also I panic that its appendix or twisted cyst or something nasty.
Help

Obviously no one who has read my post experiences ovulation pain but just to give you an update and hope for some support.

WAs so worried about appendicitis that I went to the Dr this morning and she examined me and said she thought it was ovary pain not appendix but she would do a blood test for raised white blood count as if you have appendicitis then you usually have raised cell count as well. The cellcount showsthat you are fighting infection so pain in appendix region and raised cell count point to appendicitis. I will get results of this blood test later today am very worried.

She has also arranged for me to have a pelvic ultrasound in two days time.
She is certainly doing all the tests so can't complain but just scared!!

Hi there

Not sure if you have read some of my earlier posts, but I suffer with this in exactly the same way as you.

Before the HA started, I never even knew when I was ovulating, but now every month I seem to get bad lower abdominal pain which lasts pretty much the full two weeks prior to my period.

I have had a pelvic ultrasound back in April and it was completely clear.

My GP explained to me that anxiety, hormones, IBS etc all seem to go hand in hand, and if we are prone to worrying about symptoms then everything seems a whole lot worse.

She basically said it is possible to suffer from PMS from ovulation, and so suggested that I try a complex B vitamin (esp vit B6 and B12) to see if that helps. I took it for the first time last week and I'm sure its making a difference.

I make matters worse by marking an "O" in my diary mid-cycle, so as soon as I look at it, BINGO, I get the pain! My hypnotherapist has suggested moving the date forward a couple of days each month (and writing "less pain" instead of "O"), and she has bet me a fiver that the pain will ease and will move on a few days each month.

So please don't worry - I never realised until I posted a similar question that so many of us suffer with bad ovulation pain. I guess it is all tied in to the anxiety!

I had a friend at school who had appendicitis - believe me you really would know if it was that! Plus, that pain is there day in day out, not just at ovulation time!

Hope that helps! Go have the ultrasound, and be reassured that it is clear, and give the B vitamins a try (but be warned - they turn your wee bright yellow!!!)

Take care

hi there, i too suffer with ovualtion pain, I am 26 and had it since being a teenager, it got progressively worse upto when I had my son two years ago. I went on the pill for 6 months and it completely stopped!, been off pill about 6 months now and it is getting bad again mine always happens exactly 10 days after my period stops, and lasts for about 48hours, i can hardly stand it hurts to move about and that. I tend to try and relax through this time!

Also my anxiety gets bad on the lead up to it, think hormones are flying about!!!

Wow thanks everyone for replying, I thought I was only painful ovulater!

Well I have got my blood test results back and all was normal so Dr said my pain cannot be from a festering appendix. The blood test tells them if there is any infection in the body so although it is not just for appendicitis as any other bacterial infection could affect it she said yu can't have a grotty appendix and a normal result.

Next my scan on Friday having of course to have a full bladder, I've had them before and its a bit grim with your legs crossed!

I didn't have any trouble coping with these pains when they only lasted 2 or 3 days but 10 days is another matter altogether. Hope its just a phase and its not going to continue till after menopause!

Hi,

I also suffer with painful ovulation, and some months I get pain right up until my period comes. I have had 2 ectopic pregnancies in the past, so on another forum I go on, I mentioned this pain and was told that it was probably something called a corpus luteum cyst. These cysts develop on the ovary at around the time of ovulation and they can be very painful at times. They disolve at the time our periods come, and everyone who ovulates gets these cysts every month.

Almost all the women on the other forum that I go on say that they get painful ovulation, so it seems like it is a "normal" thing.

I hope this helps

Hi ladies.
I am new to this site, and on my first outing i have found answer to extreme pain lower right abdominal. To confirm i went to doctor she is excellent and confirms possible inflammation at site of ovulation, she has booked an ultra sound for me.
Extreme sympathy to whatifgirl as a new ovulation pain sufferer,i only have to put with pain for 8 to 12 hrs, cannot imagine handling that pain for 10 days!
strangely i used to suffer a lot during my period, but since i had my daughter the pain occurs at a diffrent time.
I had to have an emergency ceaserean, its from then i have had uncomfortable ovulation and pain, like one of the girls said they "never knew when they were mid cycle" i was the same however now i do.
I am worried now though, as i want to have another child, is the possibility of Ectopic increased? could my fertility be affected? the more obvious problem is because i am in so much pain during a fertile time i would not be in the mood!!!!
Has anyone on the forum successfully had a baby?

It's such a comfort to read about other people's experiences.
I'm 22, and in september, just as I was graduating from college and preparing to find a job, I was struck with severe pelvic pain. I went back and forth to the doctor, who kept thinking it was just a stubborn bout of cystitis (although my urine tests were negative for any infection). finally I got to the hospital, where I had a scan, which showed an ovarian cyst which had ruptured 2 weeks earlier, during ovulation. Then the pain seemed to fade away, but returned 13 days later. I had another scan, which showed nothing except a bit of liquid from a corpus luteum(?) on the right hand side. This was exactly the location of my pain, but they said this liquid was normal and wouldn't be the cause. Since then I have been on antibiotics for pelvic inflammatory diisease - my doctor suggested this as he was running out of ideas. I didn't think my pain could be anything to do with ovulation as I though that only lasted a day or 2, but it seems it can last longer?
I feel desperately unhappy - before this all started up I was a happy healthy sporty girl looking forward to getting a job and with a new boyfriend. Now my relationship is under strain because I feel embarrassed about being ill, and all I do is lie in bed crying as it hurts to even walk. I am also terrified about not being able to have children. But it sounds like maybe ovulation pain is something I didn't consider? It would be a relief to have an explanation. It seems to have flared up, for the past 2 months, 2 weeks before my period and lasted throughout the run-up to it. last month it faded as my period ended, hopefully that will happen this month...
I get really confused about cycles etc (rubbish at biology) and sorry as I probably sound really muddled, but if anyone could help me I would be so so grateful; none of the doctors I've seen have provided much comfort or help and I am becoming desperately miserable.

Hi casey, you poor thing. This must have been really worrying for you. I don't suffer from severe ovulation pain, just the occasional twinge. I did find this though:

Maybe you could ask your doctor if this could be a factor? There's all sorts of stuff going on in your reproductive system a various times of the month. Hope you get some answers and feel better soon.

Hi

I'm suprised there are so many of you out there that suffers with this pain.

I didn't suffer with it until I had my baby in january and I got my cycle back after breastfeeding.

But 2 years ago I was pregnant and had a miscarriage. When they scanned me they found a large dermoid (full of bone and tissue) ovarian cyst on my left ovary. It was 10cm x 10cm. It was obviously there before but the pregnancy hormones caused it to get bigger. I had a cystectomy and they removed asap. Luckily I only lost the surface of my left ovary and it was still functioning.
4 months later I got pregnant (i shouldn't have done, but I couldn't wait) and this is where I am now.

I thought the pain was due to the op, and the Gp got me scanned to make there wasn't another one , and luckily I got the all clear.

I sympathise with all you out there. It's very painful (even during sex). I thought I was cracking up.

Do you know if ovulation can relate to depression to? because that would make loads of sense to me!

omgosh can I relate! I'm 43 and ovul. pain is getting worse but here is what helps. Get in bed on your knees like when were little, sticking your butt up into the air and lay there like that. OH MY IT FEELS SO MY BETTER!!!
I too have pain down my thighs, bloating, pain in uterus area, not just down right or left side, nausea. It lasts about 4 days now. I even had my uterus lining froze, reducing my periods down to two drops a month if that even. Best surgery I ever had. I barely cramp anymore except for at ovulation time. IT HURTS SO BAD I think it's my appendix or soemthing else. Just bad stomach aches. In fact, almost threw up last night when got into bed. Please replay to my personal email addy instead of here if you can, not sure i'll find my way back.

Hi,

I am 27. I had a severe pain in the lower abdominal area 2 weeks back. It was really a sharp pain lasted for 1.5 days in one particular point in the lower abdominal area. I couldn't walk, run or even sleep properly. From the thrid day it started reducing but everytime i press that point hard it would start paining lasting for couple of hours. It is close to 2 weeks now since it started but its still continuing. But the intensity doesnt increase unless I press it hard due to exercise or to test. I workout for 1.5 hrs evryday.

I went to a gynecologist yesterday and explained her. She did the external ultrasound scan and pap test. Sonographer(who did the ultrasound scan) started pressing the transducer over my lower abdominal area and exactly at that point it started paining. She said that point is my right ovary and I was in my ovulation period. She measured the follicle size and consulted with doctor. She said everything is in healthy condition and nothing to worry.

As you know, I am still waiting for my pap test result. Though it feels good to hear from them that I am healthy. I have that this wierd feeling that I may have something serious as the pain continues everytime it is pressed.

Thanks for this Thread topic. It was very helpful reading your blogs girls.

Hi - I'm 34. I have been experiencing this very mild (but annoying) twinge in the left hand side of my abdomen. It started about 4 months ago and sparked off the worst bout of health anxiety I've ever had. (Now and then I go through concerns about my health, and I am prone to worry - but this was ridiculous and it moved on from my side to other things I became worried about.)

Anyway: I had an internal exam with my GP and blood tests - which was all normal. I had an ultrasound, which was normal. The only thing the ultrasound found was a follicular cyst/dominant follicle on the left hand side. That was on Day 10 of that cycle. It also found that left ovary was slightly larger. Days 16-18 of that cycle, I had the stitch-like pain quite intensely (but still didn't need painkillers), and I assumed it was that follicular cyst rupturing at ovulation. Before we'd had the ultrasound done, my GP had already referred me on to another specialist GP trained in gynaecology - and when I saw her, she agreed with my interpretation of the pain as being ovulation.

To describe what it feels like, it's not a bad pain, it's like a 'twinge'. Someone described it online as feeling like their ovary was being gently pulled forwards on a string from outside, which really captures the sense of tension as well.

To get a better idea of what was going on with my cycles, I decided to try charting. Have you heard of this? You might want to try it. Buy the book called 'Taking Control of your Fertility' by Toni Weschler (sp?) and buy a basal thermometer. By taking your waking temp each morning, you can find out when you're ovulating and you can see if this pain correlates with ovulation. If it does, that should set your mind at rest.

It hasn't quite worked out for me the way I hoped, because I haven't ovulated and the pain has continued. I'm thinking that for me the pain is caused by the swelling of the follicle prior to ovulation - and this can still happen even if ovulation doesn't occur, at the end. In fact, if ovulation doesn't occur, you're then left with a follicular cyst which can take a while to fade and be reabsorbed.

I'm considering going on BCPs again (I haven't been on them for 5 yrs) to stop ovulation and see if this stops the pain. There is also part of me which is worried it isn't my ovary but is my intestine or something behind the ovary - and I then spiral into worry. So I want to stop ovulation and eliminate that as a possible cause before I go pursuing more tests etc.

I get this too and went to the doctor about it the other week. For me it can last up to 2 weeks and its a dull ache when I walk, ride my bike, go to the toilet etc. It can get quite sharp at times. Sometimes it gets really bad like something is bursting into the top of my thigh. When that happens the next day the pain will be gone. My doctor said it could be a cyst.

This has been quite helpful and didn't realise it was so common...

I first noticed this when I went through my first massive anxiety period in December, I could feel it more when I walked and moved about. Since then I seem to get it along with the odd twingey/sharpe pain 2 weeks or so before my period. It sometimes might go during the day but then come back the next day.

The doctor too has said it is ovulation pain although hasnt done any scans etc.

Its reasurring to know that it most probably is ovulation pain.
