Hi there,

I had a root canal started on dec 24th and finished on Jan 3rd. When it was finished I found out that the first dentist had placed a cotton pellet dipped in formocresol in the tooth which is formaldehyde! Well, this freaked me out and I think I was prepping my self for problems as I fixated on this and visited Dr Google.

The pain in my face went away after about 6 or 7 days and I had been terrified it wasn't going to because I was convinced I had nerve damage from either the formaldehyde or the root canal itself.

So in short, I spent a week freaking out expecting a problem. I read somewhere that a hallmark symptom of nerve damage is burning and so, guess what, the next day the pain had gone away but I had mild burning in it's place.

Since then I've had a burning cheek that comes and goes and moves around somewhat to above my eye and by my ear. I convinced myself I must have developed trigeminal neuralgia because it's only on the one side. (though it isn't all the time).

I went to my doctor today and he said it could be nerve damage from the procedure but it will likely go away. (great)
I also saw my dentist and he said that is not possible for a top tooth since the nerve is nowhere near the tooth. (unlike the bottom). At any rate he said he'd never seen or heard of anything like this.

Since I've been thinking about this pretty much non-stop it occurs to me finally it might just be anxiety. Duh. My anxiety levels have been through the roof lately.

sorry about the long story but does anyone else get burning face without redness? Also get the occasional spider crawling/ tingling feeling by my ear.

If there was serious nerve damage your face would be pretty much numb.
If you had that other thing you would be in serious pain all the time.
It seems like you just have a bit of burning on your face, which easily could be anxiety, is it there all the time or now and again? Does anything help?

Thank you so much for answering.

It's there all the time now, seems to be getting worse. I go to see an endodontist on tuesday (root canal specialist).

When you go on the internet it seems like everyone who has trigeminal neuralgia got it after dental work but they all seem to be in a lot of pain where mine is just burning.

What concerns me is the burning is just on one side. Nothing helps but anxiety makes it worse (like everything else).

I wonder if anxiety can cause burning on one side only?

Hi monty

Had to post back as I had something very similar to you back in December, I haven't had root canal but my right side of my face started burning and tingling on and off then constant, due to anxiety, you are panicking over the work you had done and therefore the panic is showing in your face, I never thought it would go away but after slot of distraction doctors visits and rationalisation it subsided, I still get it s but now, but know its worry! It's awful as its on your face and you can't ignore it, I googled it and it came up with trig neuralgia but like you said it's not that, it's anxiety, I think anxiety can be so scary as its an unknown, no diagnosis for the symptoms just a quick, " yeah stress or anxiety symptom " answer from your doctor,

Try not to dwell on it and it will subside,

Meg,

I can't tell you how happy I was to read your post. I'm sorry that you are suffering too but it is so nice to hear someone else had the same issue.

Can I ask what your was like? Mine is on my cheek for a minute then it might go away for a moment and then it's on my forehead or my chin. I've been getting more anxious about it and the more I think about it the worse it gets but even when I don't think about it is there to a lesser degree.

Looking back I've been very stressed and I've been obsessing virtually 24/7 except when I'm asleep.

Thanks for the answer.

I've woken up in the middle of the night several times from a panic attack and had a burning sensation all over my head and neck with redness and sweating! I think it might just be anxiety, but if you want to get checked out anyway, by all means, do!

Hi monty,

Mine started under my eye, it's my right hand side from my angle,

It quickly moved to my cheek in my temple in my forehead. And would change in severity like you say, I would only get relief in bed as I was asleep or after a few weeks when I was busy I wouldn't notice it as much, it's going to take time to go. I even paid a fortune to go see a neurologist as I was panicking it was something serious but he did loads of tests and said he thought it was anxiety, I still get it around my eye and cheek, really odd sensation, my theory is, if its that unexplainable as a symptom then it just has to be out nerves, if it was that trig neuralgia then we would be in severe pain, if it was neurological then we would have other symptoms etc, my anxiety symptoms are never text book illnesses always weird scary symptoms!! And that is why we freak out, mine started after getting panicked over an article about health and my face went all hot burning and tingling etc and carried on for a month, they take time to subside! Just try to relax and think of it like a little irritation that will subside, you will not be as bad this time next month. Good luck and take care x
