My counsellor taught me to do the following when I get unhelpful thoughts:
1. Say "Stop!" to the thought.
2. See it for what it is, an unhelpful, irrational thought.
3. Acknowledge it - say I know you are there and serve some purpose, but actually you are not being helpful and you can go away now thanks.
4. Replace it with something else that is positive - eg, if I do this (insert something positive) it will make me feel great.

Dunno if that helps, but what I do know is that trying not to think about something makes it stick in my head, so acknowledging it for what it is, but not giving it any weight helps. Just because you think of something doesn't mean you're going to act on it. People who do act out these things don't worry about doing them, so just goes to show you're completely sane.
