Hi I am new to this game. I was admitted to hospital as an emergency at the end of February with bleeding from the bowel and associated pain. Whilst in hospital I had a sigmoidoscopy which had to be aborted due to the immense pain I had.
I was discharged by the consultant although the registrar wanted me to stay. I had to return for a colonoscopy a week later as an out patient. I religiously drank the kleen prep muck. The colonoscopy again had to be aborted due to pain despite being sedated.
The doctor said I would have to take double the dose of kleen prep prior to the investigation. So in the 4 hour slots (2 x 2) I drank 12 litres of the stuff. Almost a torture scenario.
I have mobility problems anyway so I really did struggle with this. However I did this and returned to have the procedure. Again unsuccessful.
I now have to return for a CT Colonography again having to have the preparation liquid.

I have now been having problems for nearly 2 months, I am still on the low residue diet so have no fibre, fruit, veg intake although this is supplemented with Ensure protein drinks.

Because there has not yet been a specific diagnosis although my GP says it is Crohns or UC I have not had medication for it except the painkillers I ordinarily take. I am tired all the time, go to the loo 5 or 6 times daily, look as though I am 8 months pregnant and have the most explosive wind. When I manage to go there is on occasion blood in the stools but they are 'loose' and mucousy.

I read somewhere that Amitrypteline is beneficial to this type of disorder and it is interesting to note I was taken off this medication by the Pain Clinic and put onto Nortryteline. My bowel problems started around that time.

I am asking if other people have had dififculties with the colonoscopy and also does anyone have ideas about the amitrypteline

I'm sorry you've been so poorly for so long. Have you tried speaking to people on IBD forums? As it sounds like that's what you have, they might know more about this.

I had a colonoscopy under GA on the NHS due to anxiety. Your problem is a lot more clear-cut, so they really should be considering this option for you.

I haven't heard of any link with amitriptyline. Make sure you mention it to the specialist, given the timing there may well be a connection.

I hope you can get some answers soon!

Hi there. I had a colonoscopy today and it was very painful. They had to abort after removing 2 polyps (one of which was on the verge of turning cancerous). I am going in for another procedure but this time they will do it under anaesthetic - maybe that's something you can look into to get you through it?

Amitryptiline is often used for pain usually related to IBS, but I'm not sure if they use it for Chrones or Ulcerative Colitis. I'm sure once you get a proper diagnosis they will plan a course of medication for you.

Hugs, that doesn't sound like much fun and I can understand the sort of pain you're talking about after my experience today.
