Hi I was watching GMTV this morning and Paul Mc Kenna was on there saying that ina couple of weeks he is gonna be trying this massive thing where he cures people of their phobias on a huge scale evn those at home!!! I kid you not - those are his claims!

Apparently if you are interested in becoming one of the people who he deals with in the studio (and I presume on TV) thenlog on to GMTV website and you will fill in a form. The rest of us will apparently be cured from the saftey of our homes. He sais that if we arent cured we will definately see at least a small bit of improvement. It can be any phobia. he mentioned spiders, crowds, belly buttons and more so a bit of everything there lol!

He said a few years ago it could take 6 months to cure a phobia, now it takes a few miutes! Does it? We will see...

LOL I know- its an amazing claim. Even if its a load of twaddle maybe he will entertain us for a while! Never say never though! I'll still be tuning in!!!

I saw him too. It sounds really interesting. Paul McKenna is one of the hypnotherapists I rate. There are charlatans (or cowboys) out there in every line of work, but I don't think he's one. I do think things like that are like medication in that each single thing won't suit everyone. Not brave enough to volunteer, but I will be tuning in!

On the show Paul mentioned agorophobia being a fear of crowds. I have seen this said before but can it only be this? What I mean is, my problem isnt going out so much but going too far from home. For example, if I had a busy shopping centre a few minutes walk from my house I think I would be fine to go there and reall have a leisurely stroll round but cos my town is about 4/5 miles from home that my worry. So its the distance Im worried about more than the crowds if you see what I mean. Does that mean I am kind of agorophobic or something else? be interested to hear your views!

Hi Sarah

I am just the same as you, my safety zone is 10 mins from home, my local town is 20 mins away, and its such an ordeal I never go. Even the 10 min safety zone is getting a struggle.

Do you know when Paul Mc Kenna is going to be on GMTV?

i would have thought it was social phobics who crowds affect. agoraphobia is the fear pof leaving the safety zone, be it home, garden or a 2 mile radius.

I'm not sure about Paul KcKenna but I will definitely be tuning in out of interest. Would be great if he could do some good. I think he will be using NLP techniques more than hypnotherapy. I would say that there is probably some truth in it and that it may work for some people but not others.

I guess anythings worth a try though!

I recently read 3 of his best selling books. I felt like picking up a red biro like a school teacher and marking it...poor must try harder. Go to any good book shop and you'll see the books that say exactly the same things written before his. He explains that he read every self help book he could find...and then wrote his own! Don't waste your money!
As for entertainment i never liked his shows, tacky or what. I'll post right here and now the cure to phobia of any kind including Agoraphobia which i am totally recovered from.

Face your fear - Agoraphobics go out
Stay in the situation - feel the physical symptoms
Repeat repeat repeat! - Many times every day

Anyone wanting a friend to start recovery e mail, post or p message me.

So Becci, how are we going to start your recovery? I've been there and wasted 8 years of my life from 16- 23 years old. No book, program, doctor, or anyone is going to tell you anything different and if they do they're liars.
I've been where you are, started going out and stopped. Started again and stopped. My mother did all my food shopping, washing, prepared all my meals and i love her for it, but it wasn't until i moved to my dad's that he wasn't going to let me waste my life. Straight to his doctor. Referal to specialist. One to one sessions which my dad took me to and came into. Within weeks i was going out, had a part time job, went full time got married had 5 sons..well that took 13 years!
Becci, do YOU want to RECOVER? Do those around you want you to recover? They may love you, may do anything for you but are they saying today you WILL do something for your own recovery. I spend a long time on the computer hours a day, do you? Anything to block out having to face my fear. Do the people you talk to on this site help your recovery? I go to another site very often and the people there haven't moved a millimetre towards recovery in all the years i've known them.
I can't understand people who like me become experts on their illness, but unlike me DO NOTHING. Why waste time sitting in front of a computer when immediatly after reading this you could go out! Yes you could right now. Victory could be yours TODAY. If you step outside and run back in, you are a WINNER because you faced your fear. Even to think about facing your fear is victory.
Please don't say i can't do it or i need someone with me. YOU do it now. I've been there, the tears, dizziness, floating, unreal feelings. Feeling people are looking, talking, laughing at you..may even attack you. I did 6 months of recovery feeling it every day, which was no different to not going out at all by then because every sound made me quiver and feel sick.
Becci, or anyone reading this, go out right NOW. Don't think at all. Don't wait. And come back and p message, e mail or post here to tell me what happens. There is honestly no limit to how much i will help you, if YOU WANT TO RECOVER. Love to all readers, Paul.

Hi paul.

Ok, lol firstly, i didnt go out, i had just been out before i actualy came online. I went on the fronts just to take a little wonder.
I can relate to everythign you wrote. I do chooses to sit infront of the computer, or sat on my bed and looking in my room, rather than actually doing something. I do think its only hard if if i resist it. But if i actually tell myself i want to do it, its not as hard. I do believe i have support from my family, just like you did, that actually stops me from trying to go out. perhaps if my dad had actually said no, you have to do it yourself, then i would have had to learn, but lets not dwell on what didnt happen in the past.
Thankyou for your post. I get alot of 'jip' from people because i dont class agoraphobia as an illness. simply because im not ill! im just in a habit! behavioural habit! im not dying or have some disease. its just an anxiety disorder, its only a big deal, if i allow it to be.

p.s im off for another walk now!

ok, i just checked it again on sky and theyre all saying the same thing more or less but on diff days, but basicaly, it sounds like he's on all week and at the end of the week they look back to see if viewers have rid theyre phobia via tv! its all too intetersting. Im not getting my hopes up about the agoraphobia though, agoraphobia is a little more complicated than that. But still, it could help. we will see....!

If the CD is good, would anyone mind burning me a copy of it? Or direct me to where I could possibly get a copy?

I'm emetaphobic (fear of vomitting) so do you think it'll have any effect on me?

McKenna has stumbled on a common misperception that even I held until I was told otherwise. Agoraphobia is not a fear of crowd or open spaces. It's a fear of leaving you comfort zone! The best thing is however, as your comfort zone is part of you, you take it everywhere you go!

THE VOICE INSIDE YOUR HEAD IS NOT THE VOICE OF GOD. IT JUST SOUNDS LIKE IT THINKS IT IS! Cheri Huber

Ive listened to the hypno today for the second time, although the first time i was just not able to get into it due to distractions in the house, but today i listened and something cropped that i think would have scared me, its strange to explain because with anxiety, weird thing and usual things would scare me and tonday i had this feeling that being sat watching tv with my mum would usually scare me {im usually in my room} and i had to quiestion if i used to be scared of it or not. its strange to explain. its like my memory of being scared to sit downstairs with my mum has been replaced with "its ok to sit here, your fine"

Hope your all finding success with the paul mckenna cure. The download, he says to listen to for 2 weeks. On gmtv someone emailed in to say they were cured from generalized anxiety, so theres hope!
